I have been working at Allston Trading

    Pros

Management is top-notch. They run a very transparent company, are approachable, and listen to feedback from employees. The compensation is fair and in-line with other top prop trading firms. Good benefits package with added perks such as free lunch. Great group of talented co-workers who are team players.

    Cons

The timeline for developing new trading technology has been over-promised and under-delivered.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue listening to employee feedback and taking that into consideration when making decisions.

I have been working at Allston Trading full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great balance between autonomy and risk oversight in trading strategies.
Management is fair and trustworthy, if you work hard they work hard to support you, attempt to get you whatever resources and tools you need.
Compensation is fair and competitive with respect to revenue. Expenses are low and a lot of what might considering expenses somewhere else are including in the company's cut of the revenue.
Workplace is a great environment. Good people, and a pretty casual environment. Culture is just right, it's good but not over the top.
Basic amenities such as lunch, sodas/snacks, and massages are all a nice plus.

    Cons

Still not a very large company, so even though there is the attempt to get you the resources you need that can still fall a little short.

I have been working at Allston Trading

    Pros

Fair compensation compared to other prop shops. Great interaction of traders and programmers and risk management. Tech is really custom and catered for the traders to meet our needs. You are put in a position where your potential is limitless, without being micro managed. Healthy interaction among trade groups and a truly talented group of guys. Good benefits package, profit sharing, lunches. Management is transparent about firm health and performance.

    Cons

Communication on timelines for new trading technology needs to be made clear. Sometimes requests are lost in the queue.

I have been working at Allston Trading full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

If you are smart, hard-working and motivated, then there are usually opportunities for you but you have to be pro-active. I've seen the firm let people move to NY, start new groups, partner with new people, etc. Firm has clearly been investing to diversify itself and regularly communicates with employees. Compensation is fair and competitive.

    Cons

Firm could support some of the trading tools better with dedicated developers focused on firm-wide support especially in the area of data.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't take too long to determine whether a team or project is going to succeed or fail. There have been certain projects that were clear to most people that they were not going to work. It was good to see that these decisions eventually get made but they could have been made sooner.

I worked at Allston Trading full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good Compensation package (or used to be). Nice benefits. Like to extend membership to virtually everyone. 100+ smartest people in the room.

    Cons

Toxic atmosphere with mostly unapproachable colleagues and lack of any sense of culture. Zero identity. Have no concept of who they are as a firm. Management always believes someone from the outside has a better approach or is more valuable. Undeserved poor treatment of long-term, senior level employees. In a word: politics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

specialization is imperative.Take accountability for the business model. Fail faster.

    Pros

Free food and drinks and party time

    Cons

So many people come and go. Never trust anyone or turn your back. They lay off people faster than the wind changes in Chicago. Upper Mgnt. only cares about cares about how much money they get to keep and will kick you to the street in a heart beat.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

GROW UP! Treat your employees like real people not lab mice.
