I have been working at Alpha CRC full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people, qualified and hard-working. Can-do spirit with a willingness to make clients happy, no matter how big or small. Everyone pulls together to help one another. You're never on your own when you ask for help.
They're one of the few companies in localization that cares about the client, not just the bottom line.

    Cons

People are hard-working, they have to be careful not to burn out. It can be quite stressful when lots of projects come in at once. They have to get better at anticipating what the workload will be, and when it will arrive. Their internal administrative tools (not the CAT tools) are subpar at best.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need better training about the general mission of Alpha. Better cross-functional relationship building.

    Pros

Are there any at all? No benefits, no leadership, no values. Just want to make money and exploit employees. The worst company I ever worked for.

    Cons

Endless list of cons. Low salaries, incompetent management, many unexperienced translators who deliver bad quality. Freelancers are not paid or paid much later than agreed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start considering staff as an asset or change job.

Former Employee - Project Manager in Cambridge, East of England, England (UK)

I worked at Alpha CRC full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Friendly and multicultural environment, flexible working hours, flat hierarchy, interesting clients, tea and coffee provided, some fruits.
Good place for a first experience, you'll learn a lot in very little time and you'll be independent quickly.

    Cons

Unfortunately I can only agree with most of the comments already posted. The management plays with people's professional conscience, most of the employees are stressed, overworked cash cows earning a low salary. You will only get a promotion or a pay rise if your manager likes you and even then you will have to ask for it. No matter how well you're doing, if you want to get somewhere you have to keep your opinions and ideas to yourself and get on the right side of the directors.
If you're a PM, you'll find your job is made tougher by the fact that Alpha has an awful reputation for not paying their freelancers, which makes it harder and harder to find reliable resources. You will of course have to deal with complaints yourself and will very often feel quite helpless.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to value your staff, you have some amazing talents within your teams, losing them and replacing them by graduates or juniors will not benefit you in the long term. Alpha could be a really nice place to work in if only employees could get a bit of recognition for all the time and effort they are putting into their work.
In everyone's interest, pay your freelancers, building a relationship of trust with vendors is such an important thing for a business. Having freelancers holding deliveries and refusing jobs is a waste of everyone's time and money.

Disastrous UM and HR department. The only way of surviving is being lucky enough to be working within a good team.

I worked at Alpha CRC full-time

    Pros

Honestly, it is very difficult to find some pros in this company.
I would only mention the location in Barcelona and the office itself, which is good in terms of space and that the salary is kind of “decent” but for some people only, unfortunately. For some others it is very bad and unfair. Most of the times, it looks like the salaries have been picked randomly.

    Cons

The list of cons is long…

Upper Management: These people are located in the Cambridge office and if you are working in Barcelona, you can barely see their faces once in a while. However, this is not the main problem, but the fact that they are very unresponsive and can, basically, ignore pretty much all of your e-mails and requests. So, if you are not lucky enough to have a coordinator or manager based in Barcelona that can help you out, you are in trouble because no one is gonna give you a hand or respond to your doubts/problems. Until the moment I left, there was only an office manager and the help you could get from her was really very limited.

HR Team: Same applies to the HR team; completely unresponsive and incompetent group of people; also based in Cambridge. I could never had a clear answer from them and they can also ignore you forever.

They cannot care less: It does not matter how much effort you do to make your job well, if you are in Barcelona no one will recognize your work. There are no performance tests set in place and no director or HR person cares to have a look at your work. The salaries has been “frozen” for several years and only some selected lucky people got some ridiculous pay rises after a huge and endless battle, in which they make you feel like they are making you a big favor…

Numbers are always wrong: If you are, by any chance, included in the list of lucky people who get a pay rise, beware!! They will always make mistakes to their own benefit. You’d better have four eyes and control your pay slip. Same applies for holidays; you have to be very careful because probably some day will be unpaid or will disappear from your list.

No benefits whatsoever: In many years working in the company, I never received any kind of incentive: no bonus, no extras for successful projects carried out. Nothing.

No vision of future: If you are thinking in a career at Alpha, forget it! At least, in the Barcelona office there is no possibility of growth. The only internal movements I have seen were from translator to PM and some PMs changing departments (IT/Games). On the other hand, I have seen translators stuck in their positions for ever without any chance of getting a promotion of whatever kind.

Freelancers are out of the question: If they don’t take care about their internal teams, imagine the situation with freelancers! Even when they are an essential part of every localization company business, they have to beg for their payments, which they will get after six months of waiting in the best case scenario and after many, many unanswered requests. This is not only a problem that affects Vendor Management, but the teams themselves, since they are continuously losing good professionals that refuse to work due to payment issues.

I worked at Alpha CRC full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

To be completely honest, pros are very hard to find. The location of the Spanish office in Barcelona would be one. The other might be that, since no one really cares about what you are doing, you won't feel like management is suffocating you.

    Cons

Upper management would be the biggest "con" of all. They simply do not care and most times feel like they have no idea of what can or can't be done. They are based in Cambridge and unless you are based in the same office as them, they will act as if you don't exist.

In my experience, projects are often sold to clients, even though they are not really doable within the company's capacities. However, if the project fails, the person who sold it will not take responsibility for it, but rather blame someone from the production team.

This is a company that is well-known for not paying their freelancers unless they take files hostage or threaten to sue. Upper management considers that it is the project managers' task to sweet talk these freelancers. Needless to say that after not being paid, said freelancers don't want to work with the company and if this happens in the middle of a projects, quality is heavily affected. But then again, Upper management will never accept responsibility for this problem.

There are a lot of high profile positions; however, I honestly do not know what they are there for, never seen any of them do the job they were supposed to be doing. If you are a hardworking and responsible individual, you will find yourself doing your job and theirs for the sake of your project. You can include HR or VM here.

There is no chance of progression. Also your salary will stay frozen, no matter how hard you work. There will be no benefits at all. And if by any chance any of the above happens, it will be for a ridiculous amount and they will act like you owe them your life. Also, your salary might arrive late, so plan accordingly.

As a general rule, it is a very unprofessional company and definitely not a place to stay for long.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start caring about your employees and freelancers since they are the ones keeping your cheap company afloat.

    Pros

Friendly environment, flexible working hours. Free parking space for everyone. Some fruits (but not enough for all, first come first served really)

    Cons

You should be happy with your salary as you won't get any pay rise for years. No bonuses too.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider to meet and talk to your staff. Have some schemes to discuss work conditions.

    Pros

If you're young and looking for a place to start and get good experience in localization - this company is for you. Many new challenges, options for career (unless you're a translator)

    Cons

Management is dedicated to their own problems and sometimes it seems they still work in previous century. There are many project managers who don't know their clients\project well and creating troubles for engineers and translators in situations, where they can be easily avoided.
And yes, no bonuses or compensations

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to people needs and improve impression of the company.

I have been working at Alpha CRC full-time

    Pros

Such a lack of input from managers that you won't feel like people are watching over your shoulder. You can screw up unnoticed.
Good team of people otherwise, from translators to most PMs.
Not a bad atsmophere, not a good one either. You go to work, you leave, that's it.

    Cons

Cheap company, cheap office set up, chairs, printers, everything is cheap-o.
One of the most incompetent PMs of the industry in charge of big projects.
    No professional communication.
No respect for freelancers (6 to 9 month delay in payments).
Total absence of organization. Nothing is set up correctly, from resources to IT-related processes.
    No office culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the obvious incompetents, promote (and pay) the ones who aren't, invest in some good quality equipment from softwares to furniture, pay freelancers decently and on time.
