"Great people + Casual + Unconventional + Massively Disorganized"

Sales (Former Employee) New York, NY

ProsThe people are what make this company GREAT. Very social.
It's smaller than you think, so if you're driven you can get your hands into multiple projects, outside your defined job description.
The vibe is casual and comfortable. Very few teams are micro-managed. You can stroll in 10 minutes late and it's no big deal.

ConsThere is absolutely no structure in place when it comes to A LOT of things. No one has been reviewed in YEARS. Raises are an anomaly. Aggressive sales people will get their way, even if it goes against what's best for the company as a whole. Upper level management don't currently get along which has caused major rifts between departments.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlay nice with other members of upper-level management, even if you have to pretend. Personal grievances shouldn't bleed into the professional landscape so one department feels divided from another.
Compensate the employees that deserve it.
The editorial and content are stale and the brand needs a re-boot if it wants to be competitive again.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

It was a cool place to work at....until the new owners came in

    (Former Employee)

ProsAmazing people to work with and great upper management until they either decided to leave or got fired for petty reasons.

Great events and resources until the new owners took over and started penny pinching.

ConsThe new owners came in and created a hostile work environment through fear and intimidation. The owners have no clear direction on where to take the brand. They have no clue about the media/magazine industry nor do they know what is content. The dude seriously asked what is content during a meeting.

I give it less than six months to tank.

    Advice to Senior ManagementJust stop

It was a really great place to work before it got sold to a private equity company.

Systems Administrator (Former Employee) New York, NY

ProsThe people, It always seems to attract a great set of people to work with.

ConsPublishing is not growth industry to say the least.

Advice to Senior ManagementI wish you the best of luck. When I left there were attempts to diversify into other media, but if the recent reports of the attempts to sell are any indication things are not going well.

Great place for networking and experience across multiple platforms, not a career-oriented place you settle at

Events/Marketing (Former Employee) New York, NY

ProsFun environment (it's Maxim), most employees are laid back and easy to get along with, excellent opportunities to carve out your own path and take on/learn new responsibilities that are outside your range of experience.

ConsVery long hours in the office and weekend events = poor work/life balance, no clear direction from management regarding overall brand objectives, personal responsibilities, issues/disputes with internal and external counterparts, building revenue often means sacrificing editorial integrity and employee satisfaction, raises/promotions are far and few between

Advice to Senior ManagementEmployees across all disciplines should be given a clear understanding of what their responsibilities and expectations are

The least professional collection of people in all of print media

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) New York, NY

ProsFree booze and photo shoots of models in the office

ConsThe leadership and ownership are completely clueless

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit -- you are too stupid to be trying to save them. Note that Stephen Duggan isn't leading the company anymore -- not that he was any better.

    Work Hard, Play Hard

Marketing Manager (Former Employee) New York, NY

ProsMaxim actually lives up to the dream. Celebrity events, incredible access to everything, driven people and a community environment.

ConsNew owners have recently taken over the company and stifled the personality that made this once an amazing brand.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry not to restrict the creative freedom of the people that make you great.

    S&%* Show

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

    ProsFun and smart colleagues.
    Beer fridge.
    Good parties.

ConsTotal chaos - five CEOs in two years, three different owners.
No clear strategy - change of direction every six months.
    Stench of desperation.
    Beer fridge.

Advice to Senior ManagementDouble down on the beer fridges and ride this puppy all the way to the bottom!
