Alstom Hornell - Avoid at all Costs!!

I have been working at Alstom Transportation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay and Benefits are better than average (yet even that cannot retain good employees)

    Cons

First, there is the location itself. If you like living in the middle of nowhere, and enjoy driving 60 miles just to go to a Super Walmart... and yet pay the highest property taxes and gasoline prices in the nation, Hornell NY is the place for you. There is literally NOTHING in Hornell but run down buildings and welfare recipients. This town rises and falls on Alstom Transport. Most employees travel over an hour to work each day because no one wants to actually live here. As for Altsom itself: Poor management (every project is at LEAST 12 months behind). The unprofessional-ism in the office is beyond anything I have ever seen before. With some in management there is the "old boy" network... in fact, there are 2 "old boy" networks. 1) Those who have worked at this place for over 30 years... if you haven't, or did not go to high school with those guys... or are not related to them... you are less than nothing. 2) "The French Connection"... if you are not from France... you are less than nothing. Engineering lacks any direction whatsoever. I have worked here for just over 2 years and I just met my SEVENTH manager since working here! 7 managers in 2 years... think about that. Is there any wonder why its a revolving door in this place? They hire and fire like crazy, and then complain they can't find quality people to come to Hornell. Duh... the word is out about how you treat people! If there is a week when someone doesn't get fired, then someone is handing in their 2 week notice. They refuse to do any training or developing of new employees. They bring them into engineering... drop them at their desk and expect them to be producing at 100% by lunchtime... no orientation, no anything! Then 6 to 8 weeks later they fire the poor person. Who does this??

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I dont know what to tell Management. I think its hopeless, and so do the majority of people I work with. I fully expect 50% of the people in engineering currently to leave within the next 12 months.

I worked at Alstom Transportation full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Alstom has good benefits. The pay is very competitive. They have a lot of good employees who are team players.

    Cons

Their business is strictly dependent on winning contracts, which they don't do a very good job of. Management shows a lot of favoritism. They have a habit of hiring friends and relatives instead of the people that are most qualified for the job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show some appreciation to your good employees.

    Pros

Strong, stable industry where Alstom has much knowledge.

    Cons

Not enough employee training. A lot of competition in the transit industry.

I have been working at Alstom Transportation

    Pros

Lots of challenges - technical and business. Personally rewarding

    Cons

Extremely hierarchical/ patriarchal culture, local management is very dependent on orders from parent company in France. Lack of training, no walk the talk especially on work life balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management should talk directly to the worker bees, maybe be more effective

I have been working at Alstom Transportation

    Pros

The managers are very hands off, that is as long as you get your work done on time you can do what you want

    Cons

You have to start as a temp and there is no guarantee that you will be hired full time. The work gets boring and the deliverable are tight.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Don't use temps anyomore

    Pros

    - enough work to keep you busy.
    - friendly colleagues,
    - they value engineering staff
    - willing to train inexperienced staff

    Cons

    - excessive management in structure.
    - they let go of talents at bad economies. When businesses are back, they don't have enough talents to accomplish projects. Overloading occurs and there is no overtime compensation.

    Pros

They are open to suggestions and value their employees as individuals. They encourage change and personal advancements throughout the company.

    Cons

From a personal aspect, I do not like to work nights and weekends. Skunks throughout the property make it difficult to enjoy the environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management is awesome! Lower management could use some adjustments in attitute. Overall management, makes it a satisfactory place to work!
