I worked at Altarum full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible work arrangements, open to creativity.

    Cons

Staff outside the Ann Arbor HQ are B and C team, few upper level opportunities for women, people of color. Altarum reorganizes frequently--shifting and eliminating staff, changing course before new efforts can take root.

    Advice to Management

CEO and execs are overpaid relative to staff and peer organizations, organization lacks transparency, impacting culture and morale. Management has no long term vision, strategy.

I have been working at Altarum full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible hours and most people can work from home. It is nice mixing time between home and the office. This is a feature most other companies do not offer. Smaller project teams allows employees more face time with the clients and to take on more responsibilities than you find in a larger company.

    Cons

Health Care needs improvement. The company pays you to use another insurance if your spouse has their own through their employer but the deductible is much higher than other private sector companies and needs to be changed to keep employees at the company.

I have been working at Altarum full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits. Good flex-time options. Interesting work, mostly.

    Cons

Technology from the Dark Ages. So much emphasis on security as to be rendered unusable. Lack of any clear vision or strategic plan makes it difficult to believe we are headed in the right direction.

    Advice to Management

Build a clear vision for the company and share your strategic plan.

I have been working at Altarum full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

They give you a decent severance if you get laid off. The pay, for people at my level, is extremely good for a non profit. The relaxed dress code is a nice perk. Flex time for most people is another great perk.

    Cons

All groups except mine had flex time. Job security is minimal: the first thing they do when times are tough is to lay off people and cut costs drastically. This makes it hard to do your job effectively. The one thing thing they do not do is cut the executive level pay. For some reason it keeps going up, even as the company revenue has been dropping pretty drastically the past few years.

    Advice to Management

Bring in some leadership who have actually work experience at other non profit companies so you can see how true non profits are run. Stop running the company as if it were a for profit company.

I have been working at Altarum full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Sometimes you can work from home, relaxed dress code, convenient location. Flexible time policies are nice. Some of the people who work there are pretty smart and fun to work with.

    Cons

Pay for non executives is lower than average. Reliance on federal contracts means the company has been shrinking for the past few years. The turnover and reshuffling of executives is demoralizing. Human resources does not seem to know what they are doing. No racial diversity.

    Advice to Management

Take to heart your non profit mission. Stop cutting everything but your pay.
