I have been working at Altera full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Company has an excellent business and compensation is quite good. Lots of interesting problems to work on.

    Cons

But workforce morale is pretty low, and it is becoming more of a politically charged place as opposed to striving for engineering excellence.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't believe upper management has the ability to learn from and effectively correct the mistakes Altera has made in the past.

I have been working at Altera full-time

    Pros

Great people. Lots of different divisions so can explore different avenues. Above average pay and compensation. Good work life balance.

    Cons

Employees are not champions of the technology. Just get bare minimum done in a lot of cases. Feels like career development comes to a stand still at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get more aggressive, provide employees with more incentives to go above and beyond.

I worked at Altera full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Intellectual property portfolio
FPGA market controlled by stable duopoly of Altera and Xilinx
    Very nice facility
9-5 job. Some work even less.

    Cons

    Toxic corporate culture
Architects with proven bad ideas remain in place to generate more bad ideas
    Outdated IC design practices
    Obsolete compute infrastructure
Malaysian subsidiary and San Jose headquarters are too many time zones apart

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I cannot believe the poor quality of IC design work. You would think Altera had never designed a chip before. If the design contains errors, the cause must be identified and the errors must be corrected.

Get with modern industry standard IC design practice. At least use a flow, for God's sake!

Compared to engineer salaries, even the best computer equipment is cheap. Just buy it.

    Pros

Company is financially very strong. It is in a market where there are only 2 players and extremely hard to get in.

    Cons

Bad senior management and not valuing people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Altera full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great technology, interesting work place and a vibrant atmosphere. There is often a "panic dus jour" which keeps many people busy and not being as productive as they possibly could be otherwise.

    Cons

Lack of time does not enable anyone to breath and be more productive by enabling strategic thinking amongst the ranks. The only real time off is between Thanksgiving and Christmas/ New Years.

I have been working at Altera

    Pros

Interesting technology and ambitious business goals.

    Cons

Extremely political work environment. The middle level managers are driven with just one goal: do what ever it takes to save oneself from being laid-off. The top-level management runs the company by instilling fear in the employees. Employees are constantly and overtly under the threat of having their jobs outsourced to the Altera's branch in Malaysia. Its a very unhealthy work environment unless you are someone who thrives in adversarial state.
