went from good to miserable

Product Marketing Manager (Former Employee)
San Jose, CA

I worked at Altera full-time for more than 8 years

ProsI am not sure if there are any now. Started of long time ago and used to enjoy the place.

ConsSenior management made poor decisions 4-5 years ago and have since hiding their missteps thru constant reorgs and layoffs. No accountability of decisions made by executive management. Used to be solid number two FPGA company and is on the verge of becoming a me too FPGA provide along with Microsemi and quick logic.

Too many "yes sirs" with little to no technical insight among middle managers.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in engineering and product creation.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

ProsFPGA has a lot of possibilities and opportunities in the future. Great company to work in, nice environment.

ConsIT infrastructure is outdated, which impact productivity. Using old computers with lousy parts. IT support is slow, slow network.

Not a great place. Troubled management.

Engineer (Current Employee)
San Jose, CA

I have been working at Altera full-time for more than a year

ProsYou might get some good technical experience. Compensation is average.

ConsPoor management: very old school, lots of politics, micromanagement, anti-motivational methods, favoritism.
Working from home is discouraged (crunch time or not). No work-life balance.
Many unstated rules, inconsistent policies.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe fair and clear on policies.
Be consistent. Treat everyone equally and with respect.

Politics, broken, poor management, poor benefits, high stress culture

Senior Management (Former Employee)

I worked at Altera full-time for more than 10 years

ProsInteresting products and technology niche

ConsRanking system, systemic political culture with gross favoritism and micromanagement, ageism, most employees have little participation in benefits or company growth, culture is pushing toward more risk with repercussions of failures becoming hot potatoes in the wild political and subjective ranking culture, generally poor management

Advice to Senior ManagementResign - the current management has gradually dragged the company down. This has become a finance and HR driven company, the CEO has said repeatedly that it's all about shareholders 1st 2nd and 3rd (i.e. not employees or customers). And that narrow philosophy is not serving the shareholders. Stop turning out good people just because their career growth is limited by internal politics and slow growth in San Jose.

Started off Good, went down hill fast. Close to becoming worst place I have ever worked

Senior Member of Technical Staff (Current Employee)
San Jose, CA

I have been working at Altera

ProsAttractive campus
Associated with a solid foundry
Tools are better than competitors
There are a gym and cafeteria on campus

ConsLong hours
No recognition
Too conservative
Too political
Back stabbing by co-workers
No interdepartmental sharing of information
Management has put itself on pedestal and rewarded themselves handsomely while ignoring and demotivating the 70% of the working population that doesn't score Outstanding or Exceeds on their performance review - it's not what you know or how well you do it, it's who you know and shameless self promotion and how good you can make yourself look - even at other peoples expense.
Worst political environment I have ever been involved with.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of performing at Altera or subject yourselves to the same harsh standards of evaluation.
Senior management to have meaningful interactions with staff below them - not the token 10:1 or skip-level( which have recently disappeared) meetings that are a waste of everyone's time.

Worst Corporate Cultute I've Ever Encountered

IC Design Management (Former Employee)
San Jose, CA

I worked at Altera

ProsHigh-quality colleagues, in terms of intelligence & skill.
Adequate tools & facilities.
Fantastic base of experience in staff (many who've been there for 15+ years).
Always execution-focused.

ConsManagement pigeonholes employees, and rarely lets them grow their scope of responsibilities, or even demonstrate talent that may stretch beyond their nominal job descriptions.

Management actively discourages interaction between functional departments (engineering & sales, for example).

Little-to-no opportunity to try new things, unless deemed "absolutely necessary" to the deployment of the next evolutionary product.

No risk-taking.

Advice to Senior ManagementExpand your perspective. Try new things. Hire people from more varied backgrounds. Recruit back alumni who've broadened their experience elsewhere.

Management became too greedy and treat employees like cattle.

Product Marketing Manager (Current Employee)
San Jose, CA

I have been working at Altera

ProsGreat place to learn about programmable logic and system design.
Salary is industrial standard. Good people to work with and share thoughts.

ConsIt is not "WHAT" you know, but "WHO" you know to get a good performance review or pay raise.
Manager will take credit for your hard work without proper reward so that they can get promoted and stock options. The work environment is very political.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your people like human, not machine.

not a good place for a good design engineer

IC Design Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at Altera

Prosnice campus, inside gym;
good place for the people knowing how to play political game; technical skill is not important after you work there;
good place for retire

ConsBad place for the engineer who wants career growth or learning;

Many managers/senior managers/directors are pure on technical issue; but also no management skill; most of them stay 10years could help each other to control the group and keep their job security;

Engineers' feeling are ignored mostly. managers care engineer's labour only. engineers have less chance to be exposed to enough information related with their projects; they are limited to their block mostly;

managers are good at playing game to force engineers they don't like to leave; managers only care higher level managers. they don't care the engineers who work for them.

Advice to Senior Managementengineer's opinion to the managers in their group should be counted as part of performance review to the manager.
