I worked at Altera full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay is good and technology is advanced.

    Cons

The management makes bad decisions. Always trying to lower SG&A. Product quality is being sacrificed and company reputation may be in jeopardy with customers. The decision to buy Enpirion was a dismal decision. It was made only to profit off the plight of the engineer in coming up with a PDN solution for an FPGA that requires so many power rails. What the engineer needed was an FPGA that required less rails for the pdn solution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop being yes men and question the decisions being made.

I worked at Altera full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good compensation, interesting people to work with, and subsidized meals in the cafeteria. There is a fun Halloween party every year!!

    Cons

Lots of reorganizations and politics. Double standard when it comes to male behavior vs female behavior at the senior and management levels. Senior men are expected to be aggressive. Senior women are still expected to be submissive and remain subordinate. The junior employees have a more level gender playing field. Also, there were layoffs the day after a big "30 year anniversary" party. One day there was a party, the next day all your friends lost their jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show some sensitivity to the talented women leaders and managers in the engineering groups. Ask yourselves how can women succeed in an aggressive environment if they are shunned for being aggressive themselves. My advice would be to stop promoting such an aggressive environment, and start promoting an environment where people treat each other with respect and courtesy. Aggressiveness does not equal productivity!!

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Good work/life balance. Interesting projects from time to time.

    Cons

Moving from technology company to maintenance company. Always on the cutting edge for silicon nodes, but now becoming more process driven. Schedules eliminate much of the innovation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the ship right until Intel makes a good offer. You will all be well compensated to leave after the acquisition.
