I had high hopes that I would be a long time employees with Altria after the interview process but was very disappointed

ProsGood benefits; they pay higher than the average employer.

ConsThey decide half way through the year who they are going to promote.. absent any concrete variables. It is helter skelter. They put managers into roles that have no experience in that field/role but they have so much money they don't care how much money is wasted in corrections, redundancy, ill prepared workers, etc. It has gotten so everything is governed by audit and controls... if when audit has no knowledge of the business.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet with the real world and hire from outside REAL talent.

Was once a great company that treated their employees well but that is not the case anymore.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsSalary, company car. Health benefits used to be great but they continue to change them for the worse every few years.

ConsInexperienced managers who don't know how to manage people. This really becomes an issue with yearly employee reviews due to the fact that your manager (or theirs) can completely control the outcome of your review/ yearly rating. If they like you, they can make you look great at the org reviews. However, if you don't have that "in" with them, then they can sabotage your career, and make it look justified on paper! You have little to no control over the outcome.

Advice to Senior ManagementChange the promotion plan so that you don't have to manage people to be promoted. Not all good employees are meant to move into a management position. Managers can make or break people's careers, so stop putting "pre-teens" in management positions! It's a losing situation for all parties involved!

A great company to get in the sales industry.

ProsVarious opportunities to work with many people and achieve greater results.

ConsA "clique" culture; you'd better hope you fit in!

Advice to Senior ManagementBe honest with your employees...always.

    Corporate Culture & Values

    Project Manager (Current Employee)
    Richmond, VA

ProsVery challenging product to market requiring creative and critical thinking. The category continues to evolve with the entry of new alternatives to cigarettes and this company has excellent infrastructure in place to lead.

ConsCompany needs to consider more diversity in their management ranks. There is little representation of women and people of color leading teams. The focus is on innovation rather than diversity which may lead to more innovation naturally.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake full advantage of your diverse workforce. Be open to new ideas and business solutions.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Ok place to start for field sales.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThey hire lots of smart engaging recent college grads and the training is good at first. Pay and benefits are good for someone just out of college. Company car. Flexibility- you essentially set your own schedule as long as you make all your calls each month no one will be checking over your shoulder.

ConsLots. First and foremost you spend all day in gas stations which gets really old, fast. Hardly ever see peers or manager (once a month max). Have to deal with retailers who can be uneducated, sexist, and crude. Management makes the job out to be something it absolutely is not, and any time you work with them you have to put on dog and pony show. You have very little control over business results but are still held accountable. Ultimately this job just became incredibly boring, mundane, and not challenging. That on top of having the stigma of working for a tobacco company. Your manager has a lot to do with your success- if you get a lazy manager you'll be stuck.

Advice to Senior ManagementAll middle management should have to do rotations making calls. Having a unit manager who has not managed a territory in 15-20 years has no real life experience about what the job is because it has changed so much since "back in the day"

Great place to gain a well-rounded experience and exposure to a variety of roles.

Various Titles and Roles (Former Employee)
    Richmond, VA

ProsSmart people, opportunities to transition to other operating companies or rotational assignments. Resources for employee and community engagement.

ConsSlow moving at times and hierarchal. In some areas, employees can be cornered into a particular job or scope of work. And, in some instances, there is not breaking out to do other work that is more interesting or aligned with one's skill set and passion.

Advice to Senior ManagementAuthenticity is needed. You'e got top talent being road blocked by leaders trying to protect their territory.

    Tighten it up

    TSM (Current Employee)

ProsGreat Training, Great Benefit package, Great Brands

ConsToo many management levels that wield too much authority, HQ is too slow too act to help the field, Too many last minute "roll ups" that take way too long to complete, lots of pressure due to the shrinking market

Advice to Senior ManagementGo audit some stores by yourself outside of Richmond to see what the market really looks like, Quit wasting so much money on point of sale that is thrown away immediately upon arrival by half the sales force, remove some layers of management as not to isolate the TSM
