If you like developing or care about having a life don't work here

Software Engineer (Former Employee) Dublin, Dublin (Ireland)

ProsHard working, helpful and friendly colleagues. Learn some operational stuff.

ConsThe interview was intense and tested data structures and algorithms. In this job you hardly need any of them. Most of the time if you have the rare chance to do any development, you will be going through undocumented legacy code and add few lines of code to add a little new feature or bug fix. That's about all for the development.

Lots of ops work, fire stories and fixing issues. Answering customers why this or that does not work. Sometimes the issue is that they haven't even read the not so good documentation. I don't think this is what developers should be doing majority of their time.

Work life balance is as bad as many other reviewers have said. Work regularly in the evenings and weekends. On top of that carry pager and respond within 15 minutes that you got paged (and yes you will get paged especially at nights).

Also pay and benefits are not as good as for some other big tech companies. Now the office is moving to one of the most expensive areas of the Dublin so many people are forced to commute long time because the rents are so high in this area.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet developers do their job, respect them and treat them better.

    Senior Operations Manager

    Senior Operations Manager (Former Employee)

ProsFast pace, leading company in the field. Fantastic focus on customers. Good opportunities for promotion due to company's rapid expansion.

ConsNo training so you're expected to learn everything yourself as you go along. Expect you to dedicate your life to the company with total obsession. Most fulfilment centres are in the middle of nowhere.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease your attention span - as soon as one project is announced and partially started the focus goes on to the next big thing without ever having finished the first.

    A real mixed bag

Software Development Manager (Current Employee) London, England (UK)

ProsThe people are fantastic - the recruitment process ensures you'll get excellent, technically skilled, challenging colleagues. The technology is brilliant - Amazon as a whole really leads with the standard of internal technology. Working in the Glasshouse means you're working on Amazon Instant Video, which is a very sexy (and interesting) product.

ConsYour experience will vary massively depending on who manages you. Management standards are wildly inconsistent, and some of the most senior managers display surprisingly amateurish leadership skills.

The culture is very bureaucratic - expect to deal in wordy narrative documents for everything from feature specs to promotion justification. The constant priority shifts mean teams don't actually deliver a lot. The operational support required means a lot of engineers spend a week every month getting woken up in the middle of the night on a regular basis.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow engineers to actually build stuff.

Make sure senior management actively prioritise programs which affect the whole department.

Care a little more about your staff.

    ProsStock is performing decent
learn how to work in a fast paced environment
    resume name garners a look

ConsCompany is Cheap so expect no benefits
Not a start-up feel at all anymore
cut throat employees as stack ranking exists

No career development and it does not matter anyway. You have to drink the kool aid and kiss lots of butt to feel protected. Its not bout what you know but who.
Lots of poor leadership scattered throughout the company
employees known as Amholes by the local community

Advice to Senior ManagementNone, they don't care. All negativity is swept under the rug
