Working there is adequately satisfying on it's best days, but for people like me it's a stopgap measure.

I worked at Amazon.com as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

On many days it is a fun place to work at. The floor management can get you motivated about mundane tasks like I've never seen anyone else do, and most of them are pretty fair. The overall business model at least on the plant level is very efficient and their safety culture. The few months I was there I worked with several hundred other people and I never seen anyone get hurt. This is important to someone like me who has worked for other companies who have had jobsite fatalities. Also, I've met some really good people and made a few good friends while I was there.

    Cons

Not that this is unique to Amazon but they do have their share of managers that abuse their authority by picking favorites and scapegoats not based on merit or lack of it. Managers that try to play workplace politicians often weaken the morale of the entire floor staff. It only takes a few bad apples to ruin the whole batch. Likewise I also noticed that some of their so called troubleshooting staff is lazy and poorly trained. The worst one's are usually one of the manager's
cronies. I'm guessing these people are like that because they don't have to worry about complying to a production rate since a rate is not relevant to their job. If you ever find yourself needing any help from these people, you better push them! Also, pay raises are few and far between for anyone that is hired on permanently.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do you best to ensure that everyone follows the workplace culture "TOE TO LINE" and you'll have an outstanding company that EVERYONE will talk highly about. The overall business model is a good one. If you accomplish this, you will also retain more of your better people.

    Pros

Great company, plenty of opportunities, fun work environment, easy job, competitive pay, good personal growth, ample time-off policies, promotions come bi-annualy.

    Cons

Company is very strict on safety, can be easy to get lost in the pack when it's time for promotions, raises aren't all that much unless you have been with the company for some time. takes time to get noticed unless you are very driven.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to spend more time developing employees and working on promoting from within.

    Pros

The pay versus work load is satisfactory. The company HR Dept. constantly "looks" out and keeps an open door policy for all of its employee including those staffed in. There was never a concern for my safety due to Amazon.com's thorough training and safety guidelines.

    Cons

Amazon offers a "good" benefit plan not the best by no means. The work to life balance is strictly based on how much you want to go home, because if you have the PTO then you can leave at anytime without any problems, but if you are looking for overtime then this is place to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I absolutely loved the management, they all did a wonderful job.

    Pros

A great company to work for, you are given the training needed to do the job and the rest is up to you. The compensation is very competitive.

    Cons

Some of the challenges of working at Amazon are some colleagues with very bad attitudes, they approach you in a rude and demeaning manner and that personally makes working at Amazon very challenging. Also, a lot of favoritism within the lower levels.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time out to look into some these complaints and make some necessary changes.
