I have been working at Amazon.com full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Work with highly motivated individuals.

    Cons

Trying to grab the limelight is like auditions to make Top 24 on American Idol.

    Advice to Management

B/W interviews don't always reveal a candidates skills and if misevaluated maybe placed at the wrong level.

    Pros

You will work with some extremely talented, very intelligent engineers. You get to work on large-scale, interesting problems, and you will develop a product you're proud of.

    Cons

You will probably work harder here than you are used to. Also, you will be on a 24 hour oncall rotation, which can eat into your personal life.

    Advice to Management

Management has actually impressed me. Most senior management have very detailed, intimate knowledge of the products under their umbrella org-- sometimes more than the engineers. But if we're giving advice... allow the engineers a better work/life balance.

    Cons

Promotions are almost nonexistent, unless you're in the in crowd Managers are so so.. Luck of the draw To many emotional individuals in authoritative positions If you saved the company from impending doom, you wouldn't get any recognition for it.. LOL. Even if you do a stellar job.. You still may get written up or the axe..

    Advice to Management

    Lose the golden handcuffs..

I have been working at Amazon.com full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Plenty of opportunities to learn and grow quickly within the company. (If you're motivated and define your career path yourself)

    Cons

Typical top-down approach is the common theme. Management tends to look at arbitrary numbers to gauge concerns rather than actually talking to the subject matter experts.

    Advice to Management

Please work with your employees to ensure they are successful long term.

I have been working at Amazon.com full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I can only speak to AWS rather than Amazon as a whole. And one's experience at a company is at least 50% determined by the quality of their direct manager. So YMMV, but in my experience you will become better at whatever you do. Amazon Web Services is a hard place to work and is not for everyone. But it does have massive opportunities for those who want to grow. We do work hard. If you want a strict 9:00-5:00 job that doesn’t involve being oncall then AWS is not the place for you. But if you are an engineer (or manager) who wants to grow; wants to know how to code and own a system handling a significant percent of the world’s internet traffic; and work in an environment where you are surrounded by incredibly smart people who will challenge you beyond what you thought you were capable of, then you should be interviewing at AWS.

    Cons

Its hard. You will work hard. You will no longer be the smartest person in the room. If you don't learn how to self-pace and say 'no' when necessary you will burn out rapidly.

    I worked at Amazon.com full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Smart people who take ownership. Managers who don't get in the way and are above average. In general, you'll learn quite a bit.

    Cons

Growing so fast has it's challenges, it can seem somewhat wild, wild west at times. Dealing with and learning the Amazon specific infrastructure can be daunting and feel somewhat tedious. It's still mostly a Java shop.

Fun and different, however, it is like a call center, even though they say its not.

    I worked at Amazon.com full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Work with smart, driven colleagues - Laid back dress code - Company name

    Cons

    - Spotty management - Due to rapid growth many have been promoted to management without management experience - Lack of internal training on processes, policies, culture - Very political. One's success is not about performance - it's playing the game

    Advice to Management

Leadership needs to address the dysfunctional culture that exists within the data center groups (commonly referred to as the trailer trash of Amazon). Many unprofessional behaviors exist that violate the company Leadership Principles and Code of Conduct. Sooner or later the bottom line is going to be impacted.

    Pros

Amazon is one of the few companies in the United States where a software development engineer can create products (e.g., EC2, S3, EBS) that customers are rapidly adopting all over the world. And you can be sure that the engineers you'll be working with will be very talented and productive too.

    Cons

    No major cons at Amazon.
