    Pros

If you are willing to put in the hard work, you can easily affect the bottom line and get noticed for it. I've seen co-worker get promoted for being vested in the company. Like the CIO has said to me "You have a great idea, build it and let's do it!". No one is going to hold you back, innovation is what Ambit is all about!

    Cons

Fast pace working environment which might not fit everyone.

I have been working at Ambit Energy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

It is amazing how much I have learned since joining the IT department a few years ago. The world of Software Development moves fast and so does Ambit. I have seen several management changes over the years and I feel that they have finally got it right. There is an eagerness to get rid of red tape, challenge the status quo, and to genuinely do what is right for the company. There is a good vibe in IT right now.. things are happening.. lots of exciting buzz about new technology solutions and upcoming projects.

The level of talent is high here. You will be surrounded by some very smart people who are eager to share what they know and help you grow.

Management seems to get it and have been making positive changes. Everyone is empowered to be a leader even if it is not in your title.

There is little to no politics in IT. Everyone comes to work to get stuff done. There seems to be a good balance between setting expectations, goals, and delivery dates and letting you get your work done without hassle.

Oh, and the work life balance is great. For developers and QA, the work hours are amazingly flexible and most teams allow up to a 2 days a week work from home policy.

    Cons

If you are looking for a job where you can sit on your laurels then this isn't the place. It's fast moving and demands excellence. Many times they have mentioned Google, Amazon, and Facebook as examples of where they want to get to IT-wise.

IT does not promote on tenure.. they promote on skill. Some people do not like that and want to do the same job day in and day out and expect to still get promoted.. not here. People get promoted based on skill, aptitude, leadership abilities, and getting it done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue doing what you are doing. I am really excited about the direction the company and IT are making.

I worked at Ambit Energy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    401K, Benefits, that is all

    Cons

    1) Majority of people in this company aren't the brightest individuals
    2) If you work in the call center in Plano, you get treated like a child and they don't care that you have a personal life outside of the office. Sick kids, car wreck on the way in, strep throat? You better be in your desk on time
    3) They promote with tenure, not skill level
    4) If they have one bad month, their financials don't bounce back - layoff's are at random

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your employees that work hard. Don't invest in the employees who do a "decent" job but stick with them company forever; they are bringing you down.

Ambit Energy Call Center - Unpleasant Work Place

I have been working at Ambit Energy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Starting hourly pay is an average of 14.50 depending on which department you start in.
    Paid training.
Great Medical Benefits - start during training session.
    401k
    Profit Sharing
    Access to a credit union.
    Music Friday Mornings
    Casual Dress

    Cons

The Pros sound great until you actually start working at the call center. I've worked here for several years and have moved up within the company to the point where i am in a decent position, keep in mind, this is a review of Ambit's Call Center not their Headquarters. There are also many reviews out there by Independent Consultants that make Ambit sound fantastic, in that sense, it can be because they are working on their own time but not as a salaried/hourly worker directly for Ambit. Think of Independent consultants as contractors paid on how many people enroll for service.

Culture - Company culture at the call center has gone down the drain, especially with new upper management changes. Micromanaging is rampant and there is very little flexibility. When I first started, there was a "work hard, get far" attitude. which was awesome. Promotions were everywhere due to Ambit expanding into other states. Now, it's more of a "do more with less" mentality.

Inflexibility - You accrue "occurrences" anytime you are a few minutes late to your shift, call in sick, unexcused absence , late from lunch, breaks, etc. (although you have a 15 minute time bank that helps you from getting an occurrence if you a few minutes late, however, you only get 15 minutes for the whole month and does not roll over) If you have kids, this is not the best place to work at since they can get sick unexpectedly and after accruing several of these "occurrences", you will be given verbal, written, and a final warnings before being let go. No, Dr's notes do not help anything unless it is a very serious health issue. Getting off these warnings is not easy and its extremely easy to move up within this warning system.

Recognition/Rewards - Before, under a previous director, recognition was more common. You'd get rewarded for your hard work, you'd be give snacks (and balloons) for every good call evaluated by Quality Assurance and although any call center has a high turn over rate, the people who'd do good at their job could genuinely feel appreciated and promoted. Normally, you'd get several hours of overtime per check simply because of how the schedule system worked. But on top of that, optional overtime and bonuses were also available - the "work hard, get far" mentality. Yes missing the snacks and balloons may sound ridiculous but the little things matter a lot, balloons on several coworkers desk helped liven the place up and seem more relaxed. Now, under a new director, schedules have changed so that every penny is saved. A majority of the call center employees are having trouble barely getting 40 hours per week, no more constant recognition for good grades. Now, it's even harder to be rewarded based on your monthly feedback.

The Actual Job - Be ready for angry customers (good customers rarely call in unless they need to take of renewing or transferring service). This isn't so bad after you get used to it, it's just the repetitiveness that will get to you. Minor IT issues here and there make the job harder, it affects everyone and it's completely out of your control. Things don't always go smoothly. Anywhere you go, there is a Quality Assurance Department. (not the IT Quality Assurance - that's a totally different department). They are there to grade your call based on company policies, it's easy to call them the bad guys but the reality is they all started from the bottom and completely understand your position. However, they are there to follow the rules and unfortunately, new management has been quick to changing policies but do not think of the unintended consequences which also affect your score negatively. Many policies have changed and reverted back due to old ways many peoples scores sinking so low - the low scores were not all reversed for everyone.

Overall - Your direct supervisor most likely started in the front lines as an associate and moved up to their status, so if you are genuinely working hard, they understand and will help you as much as they can. But they are very limited in what they can do. The people you work with are probably really nice but you'll see many of them come and go. This is a good job if you need something that pays well and great benefits if you are willing to put up with the general management issues. More tenured/higher paid employees have been complaining and leave but newer ones don't know the difference. Having first hand experience - you cant help but feel that perhaps that is what upper management may want.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make this a decent place to work in. Im not asking for ping pong tables and an arcade machine. Just make it somewhat enjoyable. Add some more flexibility and many people will be MUCH happier. If policies change, please make sure they are well thought out before implementing them. The CEO seems to have a great outlook for the company and has a lot experience in the industry, he's ok in my book. When i talk about "upper management" i'm referring to management within the call center, not necessarily the entire company.

I have been working at Ambit Energy

    Pros

Ambit works on practical system issues taking place in the energy industry...applying new technology to an old industry. The culture is very forward looking. The company has matured a lot over the years.

    Cons

The company is coming off a really fast growth trend ... it is still maturing its processes, but I see it improving. I like the direction of the management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
