I have been working at American Academy Of Pediatrics full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Working on content that will help save the lives of children is very rewarding, and the work-life balance is great with this organization. The benefits package is excellent! For those who like quiet workspaces, this is a great place to work.

    Cons

Unfortunately, because this is a nonprofit organization, a lot of promotions and upward mobility has to be approved through HR, meaning many requests for new positions and promotions are often denied. Most managers are competent, but some managers and executive-level staff are disorganized and disconnected from day-to-day operations. Building is located in a far Chicago suburb (and execs are considering moving further), making it difficult to commute without a car. IT department mostly focused on control over networks as opposed to being supportive of staff needs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider not moving to Itasca, make the all staff meetings more informative, and consider reworking the HR approval process. The latter is probably the number one reason why I'm considering leaving this organization.

I worked at American Academy Of Pediatrics full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The mission is incredible--who could be against improving life for children? Very good benefits; mostly nice employees; some freedom to create my own job; good work/life balance

    Cons

VERY poor management, from CEO on down; nearly no chance for movement to another job; HR is way overstaffed for a company its size, but management must use it to enforce rules. I saw very little progress on projects over the years I worked there. After a while, you begin to feel that your efforts don't matter. Also, I saw numerous instances of unwillingness to change from senior staff. I was so relieved to leave and go to a job that values my expertise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This was the only nonprofit I have worked for in a long career. The difference in how much gets done by a for-profit company compared to AAP is incredible. The mission is too fragmented. Pick one issue and get something done about it--not possible to change it every year. The management should NOT be physicians. Get with the changes in medical environment and be open to change, not just say you are open to it. You have not been willing to change or improve.

I worked at American Academy Of Pediatrics full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Compensation is on the high side for the association world.
The mission is noble and the emphasis on children, not just physicians, is great.
    Benefits were decent.
    Work life balance good.
    Location great for suburban living.
Members were wonderful and really cared about their work.

    Cons

HR is not there to support employees.
Upper management is very out of touch, not supportive of employees, and not accessible
Culture has changed for the worse in the past few years.
There is no room for advancement in most departments.
Although it is supposedly a member organization, staff's hands are often tied in being able to do what would be most beneficial to members.
Promotions are done internally whenever possible, often to the detriment of the organization.
Too many employees have been there a long time doing the bare minimum.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Attend some of the training that you require staff to attend (e.g. change management). It is pointless for staff to learn how to make change if leadership won't buy into it.
Listen to your employees- they often know more than you.
    Provide more training for managers.
    Implement a 360 review process.
Get rid of dead weight (i.e. employees who barely know how to do their jobs)

I have been working at American Academy Of Pediatrics

    Pros

Focus on kids more than benefits for md 's; good benefits , care for employees and retention , opportunities for employee growth

    Cons

Wastes resources because of silo environment, lack of communication, the worst human resources department for support encountered in 30 years , especially having more hr staff than an environment 5x the size.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve hr support and efficiency/consistency in policy

Mission makes you feel you are doing something for the common good; benefits competitive with for-profit companies; good location in terms of ease of access and parking

    Cons

    Non-profit makes it harder to spend money; not a good location for using public transit;

    Pros

Family values, good work/life balance, stimulating work, smart colleagues, and how can you not find child health to be a great mission?

    Cons

Complacency in longtime employees, a few nasty people in a place with primarily nice people, HR is not objective or helpful in situations that would require HR involvement
