American Airlines a company in the process of re-inventing itself. Merger with US Air may prove to benefit all.

I have been working at American Airlines full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThis Company has been a great place for advancement and opportunity.

ConsCut backs in early 2000's and Bankruptcy the past two years has affected morale.

Advice to Senior ManagementHonest and well rounded reviews. Hiring and promoting should be supported by impartial oversight. Often the buddy system is used.

Bureaucracy and incompetence spoil an otherwise great company

Object Oriented Programmer/Analyst (Current Employee)

I have been working at American Airlines full-time for more than 3 years

ProsFantastic travel benefits, even for less-senior employees
Some really great people.
Company has fine ethics, diversity.
Company tried, in the past, to limit outsourcing and protect United States jobs. With restructuring/bankruptcy this is no longer possible, but was a valiant/ethical effort.
IT Area, particularly AA.com is improving.

ConsSome middle management sticking their noses into technical details they don't understand.
"Agile" project management philosophy is good, but is overly complicated and customized. Applied in a non-standard way in each department.
Lots of legacy, nasty software (SABRE/FOS)

Advice to Senior ManagementFix hiring standards
Reduce project funding model complexity further
Reduce "agile" complexity to get it to work

Low pay, Low work-life balance

Strategy Analyst (Former Employee)
Dallas, TX

I worked at American Airlines full-time for more than a year

ProsFlight Benefits are great
Interesting work
Access to senior management
Lengthy training when joining
Great variety of projects - getting involved with hiring and decisions on where to fly early on
Dallas is central so flying anywhere in the country is possible in a weekend

ConsPay is low coming in and stays low through promotions with no yearly increases
Work-life balance varies enormously from team to team
HR is outsourced to the Philippines so your manager is your sole point of contact

Advice to Senior ManagementThe culture is a bit dated, create a more fun environment and you'll get more out of your people.

Fabulous to work for a company that is going to keep growing

Flight Attendant (Current Employee)
Dallas, TX

I have been working at American Airlines full-time for less than a year

ProsOpportunities will always present themselves for people looking to excel. New experiences come every day. The pay is good in comparison to most companies.

ConsUnpredictable hours can be tiring. If you have a family be sure it is what you want. It can get stressful. Sometimes dealing with unhappy customers will have you doubtful.

Great travel benefits, but felt pretty disposable as an employee.

Customer Service Representative (Former Employee)
Fort Worth, TX

I worked at American Airlines part-time for less than a year

Pros--Awesome travel benefits (only pay the taxes on a flight, discounts on other carriers). Free flights after 5 years.
--Great people to work with.

Cons--Working through bankruptcy/merger problems.
--Although you are well-trained, mentored, and given lots of feedback and opportunities to improve, there are constant reminders that you are disposable. People can be terminated for very small things.
--Job was hourly/low pay.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in your employees so you have lower turnover.
