The most negligent work environment ever. Management doesn't follow the rules but will fire you if you complain.

    I worked at American Airlines

    Pros

Flight benefits were good but hard to get a seat at times. The benefit was free of charge in economy class and you only paid tax to travel internationally.

    Cons

Poor management. Understaffed. Planes always going out of service because of mechanical issues because AA cuts corners everywhere they can. Management has no time for the employees, doesn't follow their own advice or the law even. I was terminated for complaing too much about the aircraft peoblems and asking for accomdations that were in the scope of being covered under the Americans with disabilities act. It was the most awful experience of my life, I can no longer reccomend AA to anyone due to their negligence.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more involved with your employees and keep them happy so your customers are happy. Your training programs are insufficient, your managers are stressed and take it out on the agents and it makes for a poor place to work. Management doesn't follow the law, firing people for discriminatory reasons is going to catch up to the new American, I sincerely hoped for Change when I was hired but, all I got was my pay messed up, my equal opportunity employment requests denied for no reasons and the company terminated me for complaining. I suggest you invest more into your emloyees so they wil stop having valid reasons to sue you.

I have been working at American Airlines

    Pros

I was drawn to American because of the travel benefits. All that has changed and it is now divided into "tiers".
    Seniority trumps everything.

    Cons

With little or no seniority, you might sign in at the airport at 6 a.m. for a 10:00 flight and get bumped by a 30-year veteran 5 minutes before your flight is to depart.
Then, get bumped repeatedly until you give up.
All this, after you went to the trouble of getting the time off.
Your family [or a travel companion] are also on different 'tiers' than employees, so they could likely end up on a different flight than you or you are forced to change plans.
No more part-timers, so mandatory overtime. They disclose the overtime during the interview, but don't tell candidates how hard it is to get time off or use their so-called "comp-time."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand that employees don't want to have to work so hard to use their travel benefits or to get time off to travel.
Be up front about this during the interview process.
Ask employees for feedback - then listen and do something meaningful.

I worked at American Airlines full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Overall it was a great company to work for with excellent travel and medical benefits. Salaries have not been competitive over the years relative to the industry however due to the AA/US merger salaries and wages have now become more competitive.

    Cons

Limited opportunities for advancement as the work environment was always political and the culture very traditional.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Opportunities for promoting employees should include more fact-based decision making.
