I worked at American Apparel full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Discount on clothing. High turnover rate, so chances of moving up are good.

    Cons

Company pays very little for lower level management in store but wants you to work twice as hard. American Apparel does not provide PTO, vacation time, or sick leave for lower level management. Traveling consultant team is not supportive or professional with the in-store staff. Also. they are very clique oriented and less concerned with listening to staff needs, concerns, or suggestions. Highly suggest for someone who needs a temporary job or in school.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just start the company over with a level headed business savory individual to run the company. Hire and train employees based off their skill set and not their looks or bubbly personalities.

I worked at American Apparel full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

They offer a great discount and clothing allowance. The schedules are pretty flexible.

    Cons

The atmosphere is unprofessional and the company extremely poorly run. The pay is terrible and the culture is completely based on looks. It felt like high school working there. I would only recommend this job for a teenager after school who is looking to make some money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The whole company needs to be restructured. You'd have no idea it was an international clothing brand from working there.

I worked at American Apparel part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I started off loving the work atmosphere and their business model of vertical integration.

    Cons

Very, very disorganized, managed by very young college students who don't know how to manage others. In the span of 4 years I went through 7 managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take better care of the store managers and the turn over rate won't be so high.

I have been working at American Apparel part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    50% Discount
    Clothing Allowance
    Promotional Giveaways
Other People Think Its A "Cool" Job, which makes you "cool"

    Cons

    Obsession with aesthetics
Wearing American Apparel EVERDAY, head to toe gets old...
You have to obey the crazy rules which change like everyday, No boots, No sandals, don't dye your hair, don't cut your hair, don't gain weight, don't over pluck your brows, don't wear eyeliner, don't wear lipstick unless it looks like its not lipstick....lol seriously, its like American Apparel becomes your abusive controlling boyfriend.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote from within the store, put less emphasis on looks and more on hard work, sales, drive, stop wasting time with daily inventory/stock checks, play to people's strengths don't exclude them...give stores more freedom to be creative and embrace the culture of the neighborhood in which the stores exist...every store is different, every community is different. Pay retail employees more, make allowances bigger or increase employee discount.

I worked at American Apparel part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

If you are looking for a job that is not demanding, requires little competency, and accommodates to a hedonistic lifestyle, AA is for you. The stock managers are generally competent, but any of the female floor managers are generally vexing and incompetent.

    Cons

The hours can be excruciatingly long, but mostly due to poor management. Also, if you don't enjoy hanging out with co-workers after hours, expect to feel marginalized at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop focusing on benefits for your factory employees only and be more selective about your managerial employees.
