I have been working at American Association for the Advancement of Science full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits package; prestigious organization; can feel good about your job; challenging and stimulating work.

    Cons

Favoritism from upper management (promotions not necessarily based on performance); not a lot of room for growth; can be a hostile work environment; no support from upper management, and not a motivating or morale-boosting environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your staff like they're human beings, and understand what motivates them. Be supportive, mentoring and encouraging. Don't only speak with your staff when you're there to criticize them or tell them they've made a mistake.

    Pros

Challenging and semi-fast paced work environment. With each successful project and/or display of maturity, a gradual increase of projects, responsibility and accountability is given in turn.

    Cons

Camaraderie among different departments is very divisive and individuals who are not keen on 'Type A' supervisors may want to do a thorough job during their interview process.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The AAAS upper management staff are really wonderful and lead with enthusiasm and encouragement.

Typical non-profit pay, atypical organization with a smart future

I have been working at American Association for the Advancement of Science

    Pros

Low stress, flexible vacation/personal time, great company outings, great coworkers, receptive management. Departmental cohesion means you are likely to make friends within days of joining AAAS. Casual Friday. Dedicated leaders.

    Cons

Non-profit pay, no bonuses, slightly understaffed, some communication issues. Due to the nature of the organization, almost everyone is on a tight deadline. The work hard (little play) mentality is strong in this organization. Although we have a roof-top lunch area, few people ever use it. Almost everyone chooses to eat at their desk.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward your employees and promote company loyalty. A competitive salary will help us sustain ourselves in this expensive city.

I have been working at American Association for the Advancement of Science

    Pros

Great modern office building and location in downtown Washington DC. Most employees have their own office with a great view of chinatown or the old post office. The location is only a block from metro center (metro station). The majority of the staff members are friendly and easy to work with. The company has great benefits: employee contribution 403(b) plan, 2 weeks paid vacation, holidays, and 2 extra holidays, flex plan, good health care options with low premiums, dental plan, transportation partially subsidized, and normaly a yearly bonus. The staff is mostly older, which can be good and bad for an organization. I would like to see some young staff be hired and get involved with the future of the organization.

    Cons

Career advancement is tough. Not a lot of room to move around or up in the organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at American Association for the Advancement of Science full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great coworkers and friendly environment. Competitive benefits package, with lots of vacation and sick days. Covers about 50% of your commute costs (if you use the metro). Encourages continuing training/education, but not equally across departments. Work from home is an option. Flexible hours and great location.

    Cons

The compensation is less than satisfactory, as this is a non-profit. You're expected to produce high quality product for less pay. There is also a disconnect between the higher management and its staff. Exhibits lack of understanding on issues important to the employees. Very low budget in areas where its most needed. Not all departments receive equal opportunity for employee training and continuing education. Some send their staff out to conferences regularly, whereas other departments are unable to make such an investment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward your employees by offering competitive salaries.

    Pros

Great environment and benefits, fairly stable, people are really nice--the scientists and science nerds type.

    Cons

Pay a bit low, too much emphasis on equality, not enough reward for excellence.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to pay based on performance, not equality.
