Pros
Outside of IT there is limitless growth and functional cross-training and movement to other teams within the organization. You are rewarded for your meeting your goals and accomplishemnts andyou are recognized when you perform above and beyond what is required.
Cons
Within IT, there is very little opportunity to move to other teams and cross-team training. Not all managers will recognize you for what you do, but there are some who do, and those are the people that make it all worthwhile.
Advice to Senior Management
Apply some of the concepts from all teams to IT, as IT is treated as the black sheep of AAM.
Pros
Intelligent Management. Good pace and opportunities.
Cons
Too much pressure on automotive industry to move offshore. Unable to support US-based operations from a cost standpoint.
Advice to Senior Management
Hang in there. The new GM could provide a second chance to survive.
Pros
American company, but American Axle is becoming less and less American everyday. The work is challenging, the environment is good, but it is not for a family-oriented person. American axle does invest in their employees as far as training, certifications, and schooling.
Cons
Long hours expected and often not compensated. Management often cuts salary and hourly workforce, and those left behind are expected to pick up all the work. This is not conducive to keeping your best employees. The best employees eventually figure out this trick and also figure out that there are better companies out there.
Advice to Senior Management
Weather the storm. I did enjoy my time at AAM, but treat your people better. I understand times are tough, but your salaries are lagging behind.
Pros
Excellent 401k, decent medical/dental, somewhat competitive salary, tuition reimbursement. Training/continued education is encouraged. Hands-on engineering is encouraged.
Cons
Long hours are sometimes encouraged, if not expected. During tough economic times like these in the US, engineers are asked to take on more work and work longer hours. The free fitness center just closed.
Advice to Senior Management
There should be more focus from HR and Senior Management on retaining their best engineers. Don't let their salaries fall behind what other companies are offering. More importantly, don't let their salaries fall behind what you are offering new hires with the same or less experience. It is hard to find good driveline engineers and even harder to train those without driveline experience. Please maintain the current 401k matching. It is our only hope of affording retirement and health care.
Pros
I will never forget the friendships and bonds that I had made. The people I worked with were the best group of hard working individuals that you would ever meet!
Cons
Watch out for the company that wants more and more from you, then makes more and more money off of your sweat, makes you promises that are not kept and then stabs you in the back
Advice to Senior Management
I don't know how you can sleep at night.
