Pros
Pay and benefits are good. Working conditions, corporate cafeteria and offices are top notch. The plants are some of the best I have ever been associated with.
Cons
Work load is overbearing, you only work half days (12 hour days). Your family life is not considered important. Transfers, more often than not to locations outside the US, are manditory or you will be benched and your career stalled. Watch your back, you can be black balled by company sycophants (FOD).
Pros
13.25 /hr reasonable for intern.
Cons
No direction from upper or lower level management, one of the worst experiences I have ever had. First internship, would not recommend.
Advice to Senior Management
AAM TR needs help not only with their supply chain activities, but also the lack of structure the internship was.
Pros
Company provide all require tooling for work, good place to work
Cons
too many meeting, over engineering for product design
Pros
good experience and better learn process many opportunities offer us a better understanding for the industry in real world. They are very patient for us to learn new knowledge
Cons
suburban area far from walmart no internet and cable. The traffic there is not very convenient. The apartments rendered by them are very old. However, they at least give us all necessities used in kitchen for free.
Advice to Senior Management
make the whole cycle more efficient. Build a more free platform for employees so that they are able to communicate with each other easily.
Pros
When times were good, it was a safe, clean place to work. Overtime was optional and the atmosphere was positive and enjoyable.
Cons
When the economy took a hit, the first things to go were the safety and cleanliness concerns in the plant. Suddenly noone in management cared about dangerous work areas or working conditions.
Overtime became mandatory and the atmosphere between management and employees became hostile. A lot of work was also sent overseas, closing most of the plants in the Buffalo, NY.
Advice to Senior Management
Stay in the U.S.
Pros
The only pro to working at American Axle & Manufacturing is they pay pretty good for those who have college degrees or in the process of getting a degree.
Cons
You are surrounded by a ton of non-educated individuals. All supervisors either have no education or have a bachelor's degree from the University of Phoenix, which is a joke. Also, everyone micro-manages like crazy and people consistently throw each other under the bus to get a head. Essentially, it seems like no one truly knows how to do their job correctly, constantly taking short cuts. The employee turnover rate while I was there was incredible. Also, people are put into roles that they cannot handle. If you have a HR degree, you'll probably end up in Materials. Senior management doesn't know how to play to employees strengths which makes the Three Rivers plant struggle constantly with meeting demand and doing anything that is efficient or effective.
Advice to Senior Management
Hire some good, smart, talented individuals and ween out all of the 20 year people that don't have a clue how to manage or accomplish anything that makes a difference in the work place.
Pros
Benefits and pay were above average. Wasn't afraid to invest money in new capital.
Cons
Corporate support could have been better. Many employees felt ignored and under appreciated.
Advice to Senior Management
The Dauch's should eliminate foul language at plant meetings, was surprised at their lack of professionalism..
Pros
The company offered great benefits a extensive holiday pay with at least 3
weeks of vacation once you have been working for their company for at least 10 years.
Cons
Not a very honest organization.
They do not respect a lot of their supervisors.
They hire a lot of people who are not really qualified to run the supervison positions
Advice to Senior Management
No comment.
Pros
The people (other than sr management) are generally good to work with.
Cons
Hardly any opportunity for growth unless you are related to someone in upper management. If they move on to a different company it's amazing how many of their friends and relatives become terminated or demoted.
Advice to Senior Management
Why do you encourage salaried employees to take Leadership classes when upper management does not follow any of the concepts learned in the classes? People do not respond well to management by fear.
Pros
Outside of IT there is limitless growth and functional cross-training and movement to other teams within the organization. You are rewarded for your meeting your goals and accomplishemnts andyou are recognized when you perform above and beyond what is required.
Cons
Within IT, there is very little opportunity to move to other teams and cross-team training. Not all managers will recognize you for what you do, but there are some who do, and those are the people that make it all worthwhile.
Advice to Senior Management
Apply some of the concepts from all teams to IT, as IT is treated as the black sheep of AAM.
