I have been working at American Baptist Homes of the West full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Consensus based, great mission, dedicated employees, fair pay practices. They have this culture thing called the ABHOW ADVANTAGE to make sure all 2000 employees understand the principles and values that the company wants to embrace. Culture change is hard, but they are making progress.

    Cons

Non-profit pay is typically a little less than market. Not the greatest with regards to problem employee management. Tend to believe in redemption and forgiveness. Not great at program and project management, but OK.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better grooming program for individuals that become supervisors.

I have been working at American Baptist Homes of the West full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

if there are any; I haven't been lucky enough to see them yet. (Okay the residents are always a blessing)

    Cons

No time for breaks or lunch due to the large work load. Also All work orders and paperwork has been left by pervious Manager.(which is absurd) The amount of paperwork is crazy. I'm expected to complete my current tasks plus the ones left from previous 5 years. How can a company let an employee waste so much time and then keep them for so long?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat people with respect: I am not your child (or) a Family member. Be-littling a co-worker and talking down to someone is not the way to handle an mistakes. People do make mistakes and management should make them aware of the mistakes. But in a professional manner.

    Pros

    Buildings and residents are wonderful.

    Cons

Horrible training! Get everything in writing they tell you one thing do another.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Implement a better training model and don't lie to your potential administrators about how easy going things are. Regionals are back stabbers.

I worked at American Baptist Homes of the West full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

They take in and care for elderly people.

    Cons

No appreciation for employees under administrator. Only the administrator gets the bonuses and recognition. Too much micromanaging and not enough competent/experienced executives hired. If you don't have experience in health care BUT you are of the right nationality and know someone in a high position.... you will get the job and get PAID!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go back to your roots and reflect and really apply your mission statement to your everyday work environment

I have been working at American Baptist Homes of the West (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice building. Pretty-good pay. No supervision at all so you can absolutely do your dismal thing. If you can't spell or punctuate or write complete not runtogether sentences, they'll hire you!

    Cons

You'll have to deal with residents who are intelligent and educated and have been places and done things. They use big words sometimes which makes it hard for you to maintain CONTROL!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit ignoring certified letters and start hiring managers whoi truly love older people and have some idea of administering HUD's guidelines even-handedly.

    Pros

The mission and the culture, everybody is dedicated to the mission so all the employees are working together, hence the team work approach and the term Team Member.

    Cons

Work life balance can be a challenge, the mission is so great, that many people put in long hours in order to make this a great place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure accountability and consistency are a focus.

I worked at American Baptist Homes of the West full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

This company has no pros for employees below administrator level.
If you are an incompetent administrator, this is a good place for you to further your career.
Promotions and good salaries go to those who can play company politics well.
De facto trade skills, good personality and a concern for other employees is not required.

    Cons

If you are below an administrator, you are of no value to this company.
Training is relegated to administrators and above.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire administrators who know how to manage and have empathy for their fellow employees.
Track their performance and give attention - in earnest - to complaints about administrators accused of abusing their charges.
If an administrator flagrantly violates your company tenets, fire them. Don't shuffle them off to another 'dioceses' or ignore the problem.

    Pros

Close to home and that's about all.

    Cons

Pay increases only go to people who brown nose. Compensation is not based on performance but rather on who's behind you kiss.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care about your employees. If you have a promising employee guide them into better positions and stop taking all the money for yourselfs.
