Pros
Flexible, alot of variety, friendly environment
Cons
Lower comparable salaries, low raises
Pros
A great place where you can maximize your thirst for engineering knowledge in the marine industry field. Lots of engineering books and technical information available for your reference.
Cons
The downside here may not be applicable for some folks if you like to travel and being relocated. ABS being a worldwide presenced company, chances of relocation is available for your taking.
Pros
As a surveyor you are normally highly respected by others in the marine industry.
Cons
Under paid and over-worked, no rewards for hard work
Advice to Senior Management
Do not spread your people so thin, you are a non-profit pay your people. Listen to your mangers in the field and reward those people who work hard for you.
Pros
laid back some what, you learn ABS guidelines (nothing really grand but still good to know)
Cons
Where do I start ...
Low salary, Very Low ...
Having 12 years of engineering experience and a graduate degree from one of the finest Universities , I've never seen a place as bad as this! Very selective management. Easy going on their friends and getting you to do loads of work. Poorest management by far!!! COMPLETE MICROMANAGEMENT!!! There are people coming and leaving every week, not a place to prosper, no chance for promotion, your experience their can not really be transferred to any other company but DNV, so not a good career choice for the long run. One might consider rusting their in his retirement days, but defiantly not a place in a beginning or mid career. If you are an offshore engineer do not settle for here, their many other places with much better benefits, much more room for promotion and skills to be gained that can be transferred to other titles or other companies. A complete waste of time and energy.
Advice to Senior Management
Fix your management. This is the poorest management by far, and the company will loose it's respect in the long run. Middle management has to be completely changed. Higher management is completely blind sided from what they hear from middle management, which are really weak people just trying to keep higher management satisfied with their words.
Pros
Professional work environment at work.
Cons
Lack of one on one mentorship
Advice to Senior Management
Give me more exposure to expat mentorship
Pros
There is a variety of work I have been exposed to and it is interesting to be involved with cutting edge technologies from different parts of the world. There is a better attempt to transfer personnel to other groups to further their careers. The benefits package is very good compared with some other companies. There is a 401k plan (no matching) and a defined benefit pension plan (for now).
Cons
The work can be repetitive and routine. They salaries can be on the low side. There is no matching 401k plan or stock ownership plan (ABS does not have stock).
Advice to Senior Management
There are some concerns whether the heir apparent for the chairman is suitable for the job with respect to strategy and vision for the future of the company.
Pros
For past 3 yrs Plus, I am trying to find out. If opportunity is there for some people, then it's good learning in the begining.
Cons
Salaries very Low, No Promotion for Non-Americans, No Appreciation, No Salary Increments, Culture is not Positive.....No...No...No
I am working here b'cause of paying bills and no other options available at the moment or should say not ready to make another wrong move.
Advice to Senior Management
If they listen: ......well they don't. Sorry
Pros
Relax and Less Pressure for the job
Cons
Not fair for everybody. Salary is very less
Advice to Senior Management
Fire those who only like harm others
Pros
Good working enviroment, low stress
Good place for new beginner
Good Colleague to work with and communication
Chance for work abroad
Cons
Low payment for local employee comparing with US employee
Low oppotunity for promotion comparing with US employee
Unfair for working evalucation
Advice to Senior Management
More US management team, NO Singaporeness, No Hong Kongness
Change current COO as soon as possible for future of ABS
Pros
ABS provides good job security and good benefits. It is well known for its cross-cultural working environment.
Cons
Salary is so not competitive compared to similar jobs in the industry. As an engineer doing regular duties, there are not many good opportunities to advance in career and also depends on individual's direct supervisor. Experience of being a surveyor or expat is necessary if you want to advance in the company, but that kind of opportunity is very hard to get.
Advice to Senior Management
Company needs to promote intellegency and delegency among empolyees; Give rewards to people who do good jobs, not only to those who speak well about themselves. ABS has a lot of of well educated employees doing jobs that do not match their competency, which seems to be a waste of talents. Management should encourage initiatives from employees to finish job faster and better out of the traditional approach.
