    Pros

Not much good about this company anymore. Maybe the benefits. If you are a slacker, this is the place for you.

    Cons

The company has changed since new leadership took over. They are hiring new leadership people who treat employees horribly. Firing people who are dedicated, hard working and have been with the company for over 10 years for unfounded reasons. They allow management to bully and talk in a threatening manner to employees and the employee then is punished with demotion or removal. This is not the ABS it was 3 years ago.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix this company. Stop allowing managers to bully employees. Start caring about the people again.

    Pros

Plenty of opportunities to learn new skills. Company is always posting new jobs on the internal job board. Tuition reimbursement, and scholarships for family members. Partial gym membership reimbursement and a traditional retirement pension.

    Cons

Sometimes hires personnel from our competitors into leadership roles instead of promoting from within. Multiple "supervisors" who review your work differently and give conflicting directions. If your not in a major office, you are forgotten about until something goes wrong then you are crucified. Leaders don't lead, they react telling you what you should have done, not what you need to do. The required training is a joke. The instructors want to be there less then the students. Problem people are either promoted out of the position or transferred to become someone else's problem, never fired.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is time to start acting on what your people are saying. Having company meetings is not enough.

    Pros

Great co-workers, free on-site gym, great vacation time

    Cons

Some managers need to learn how to handle stress properly. Don't take it out on the department. Learn proper management skills and treat your employees like people should be treated. With respect. Stop degrading them and humiliating them in front of their peers. Stop the verbal abuse, and work to live, not live to work.

It's a bad sign when you and your co-workers are afraid to go into your managers office to speak to them. It's also bad when you plan your vacation time around your managers' time off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Step back and take a look at the Marketing Department. It is broken. You know where it's broken. Fix it.

I worked at American Bureau of Shipping full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

You gain a ton of experience in the industry and make many industry contacts. For the most part, you are well protected and the benefits package was great. Job security is great, as the company has a very long standing history in the industry.

    Cons

Pay is low for the responsibility level! There are a ton of politics that dictate everything from raises to relocations...there ARE "favorites". Relocation is one of the largest issues, as you are guaranteed to move numerous times throughout your career (many places are certainly NOT desirable to live)...if you don't, you won't have a career with ABS.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Base less on one's willingness to constantly relocate. You have many loyal, hard working, intelligent employees who, for many reasons, may not be able to relocate...they shouldn't have diminished career opportunities because of this. Increase salaries! You lose MANY people due to this fact alone! The majority of people leave for higher paying jobs in the industry or with competitors who are willing to pay Marine industry standard rates. If the pay were higher, and office location opportunities were better, I'd still be there!

There is good support from management and positive reinforcement.

    Cons

Human resources was a headache to deal with on most fronts.
Office environment is very quiet and conservative. This could be a pro for some.
