I have been working at American Campus Communities part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Discount on your rent. Can walk to work. Awesome opportunities for growth. Largest student housing in America.

    Cons

Not being paid for being on call. Living where you work puts the CA at a 24/7 job title without a 24/7 pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have full time CAs and part time CAs. Only the full time CAs should be on call.

I worked at American Campus Communities

    Pros

-You are in the position to meet a variety of people everyday, with new faces coming in each day to take tours. Your job rarely gets boring because you're constantly working with new residents, and new issues arise daily.
-At first, they try to work with your schedule..because you are a student.
    - There are different activities and events to plan for each month, so if your interested in any kind of event planning..this is the place for your creative mind.

    Cons

-After awhile, they stop caring that you are a student with a job. They expect you to attend events during finals week, on nights before tests, and they don't even drive you to the various locations. You have to drive yourself, and probably pick up 3 other employees along the way with NO reimbursement. (They say they'll reimburse you, but they don't).
-There is absolutely NO communication between employees and management, and hardly any training. Then when you do something wrong..instead of coaching you through it so you correct the problem, the management gets upset with you and won't speak to you for a day or two.
-When you're the only leasing agent in the office, expect to do ALL of the work. The "managers" just huddle up in one of their offices and close the door all day..leaving you to run around answering phones, AND greeting potential residents.
-UNDERPAID! NO COMMISSION! The company markets the leasing agents job as a "Sales Job" ..but most sales jobs I know allow you to receive commission. They do not give any incentive for the amount of work you put in to get their company leases. So, it makes you not very motivated..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Listen to the leasing agents. They are essentially the ones getting the company leases and business.
-When going out to certain events, cater to the right demographic. Don't just make us go to any random spot
to get our name out there. It's pointless, and we usually only get the names of locals anyways to fill up the guest cards.

I worked at American Campus Communities full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very team oriented company with frequent meetings and multi-level communication. They love to promote from within so the growth opportunities are there. Benefits are fair with decent amounts of vacation and sick time offered. They prefer to employ team oriented individuals, the people I worked with were (almost) always friendly and easy to work with.

    Cons

Compensation is on the low end and bonuses are only offered to office management. Depending on the location they penny pinch as far as resources go. Notorious for over working, getting blood from the stone if you will. An unofficial company motto of "C.Y.A." sometimes prevents managers from focusing on solutions and rather they focus on keeping themselves out of the cross fire. Corporate level will throw employees under the bus rather than work on solutions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the C.Y.A. mentality and focus on solutions. Do not play favorites, every location should have the access to resources and funds they need rather than making them jump through hoops to earn them. In my 3 years I saw too many very good workers leave due to these two problems. I wouldn't suggest this job to a friend, but these are easy ideals to change.

I have been working at American Campus Communities full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Young and energetic co-workers, many whom are passionate about what they do. Many have a lot of experience who started at the property student staff and worked their way up. Lots of career development opportunities as company likes to promote within.

    Cons

Not as collaborative as hoped. Sometimes corporate to property level communication can be difficult. Not many thoroughly defined practices and processes due to rapid company growth, which can be frustrating to some.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More collaboration and transparency. Each and every department from leasing to accounting should be aware of company goals and objectives.
