    Pros

The people who work at ACC are extremely committed to residents, employees and the bottom line. It is one of the best run business's from the corporate level to the property level. When there is room for improvement, they act on it. When there is room for advancement, they promote quality employees from within. Being on property staff anywhere in student housing brings with it certain challenges, this is called opportunity, a chance to do something to help you succeed. It's called a job, and if you just do it, you can get far in this company.

    Cons

The only con working in student housing are the students. Sometimes, they are very difficult to work with whether they are your coworker or a resident. Too many have been raised to feel entitled and when they are expected to actually be responsible, hard working adults, it is everyone else's, especially managements "fault", that they can't do whatever they want without consequence, or they aren't made manager after only a few weeks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stay the awesome leaders in student housing that you are!

    Pros

Easy job for a college student to manage while in school. Involved within the community. Work for rent, basically living for free.

    Cons

While it is an easy job (stressless), they make you feel like you should be involved with every activity even when you're not working. Make you feel guilty even if you have other obligations outside of this community

    Pros

If you are going to work in student housing American Campus is the place to be. I have worked or another company before and the grass is not greener on the other side. Their systems, operations, and selling tactics as far as running the properties is by far superior. I feel empowered for the amount of responsibility that rests on my shoulders everyday. For the most part, it's one big huge happy family/team. Haven't met anyone in the two years I have worked for the company that didn't buy into being the best in the industry.

They love their people! They want you. They want you to stay. If you are smart, ambitious, hard working, and willing to travel you will go far quickly.

    Cons

Working on the property level, don't expect to get rich. You have to enjoy what you do with all of its challenges in order to make it with American Campus. If operating in excellence, providing quality student housing, and delivering exceptional customer service is what you want to achieve the amount of money you make is a small fraction of the benefits.

Sometimes it may be difficult to make a name for yourself. ACC is a huge company and the squeaky wheel gets the grease. It can sometimes be all who you know, who you work for, and what market you are in.

Just because you make them money doesn't mean you are in good status. ACC has very high expectations. If you don't surpass the expectations...get ready to never live it down and to sit where you are for a while. But that is really with any company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

ACC does well with promoting with in. CA's and GM's seam to be the the twinkle of everyone's eyes at corporate. More talented people would be produced from the company of lower management would be recognized for the accomplishments of the property not just the GM's.

The bookkeepers, leasing coordinators, leasing managers, maintenance managers, maintenance supervisors and AGM's 90% of the time are doing the grunt work. It doesn't have to be a big huge conference for them. But take pride in the people who make it happen or put more pressure on the regional managers and general managers to make sure their other staff, not just the community assistants, are the ones that are the key to the puzzle and making the property run.

I have been working at American Campus Communities part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

A great job while in college that provides a variety of experiences. Although you only skim the surface for most of these skills, it gives you some experience in account management, sales, resident life & coordination, and working as a team. The company wants to see you grow within the company, so even if you leave you can always come back (Note: This "growth within the company" is ACC's way of marketing the company to their employees. It is a tactic to make working for the company attractive. Not a bad thing, just an observation.)

    Cons

Community assistants have a lot of things to juggle. You can do it and still commit to school easily, its just going to take a little more focus than working at a coffee shop or restaurant.

I am also not a fan of the "create a sense of urgency" to get people to sign leases. It dances on the edge of lying to the customer and that is not within the boundaries of my business ethics/morals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management does a good job of helping Community Assistants.

    Pros

Great opportunity for advancement and very focused company. They seem very interested in promoting from within.

    Cons

Feels like you are being brainwashed when you work for them. They try to make themselves and their company sound so great so new college graduates will stay with them and make subpar salaries.
