I have been working at American Cancer Society full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Somewhat flexible hours, ample PTO, mission-driven organization, clean facilities

    Cons

The directors at the Patient Service Center are out of touch with the needs of the call-center staff. Low pay for those with advanced degrees. I worked at the American Cancer Society for 3 years at both the Patient Service Center and the Quitline (quit smoking program). The Quitline seemed well organized, structured and stable. The Patient Service Center felt more like a sinking ship. Constant turnover surrounded by lay offs and constantly changing policies led to a feeling of helplessness and chaos. I left on a Monday afternoon and never came back.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your front-line staff. Offer schedule changes when needed. Do not appear untouchable or distant.

I worked at American Cancer Society as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. They offer such great programs for woman dealing with breast cancer.

    Cons

Not a lot of work for interns. There were times when I would tear brochures for 4 hours.

I worked at American Cancer Society as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Great pay, flexibility and independence to complete tasks at own pace

    Cons

Not much room for lower level staff to influence management, large institution

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Support current staff with trainings and in house promotions, there wasn't enough room for growth within the organization

I have been working at American Cancer Society

    Pros

    You work with great people

    Cons

Caseload can keep you busy if you don't keep up, they have a weird "sick time" policy where you can't have "unscheduled absences" more than twice in a "rolling quarter", Full-Time is actually only 37.5 hrs a wk so you get paid less

I have been working at American Cancer Society full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great co-workers, nice managers, helping patients, don't take work home, good experience.

    Cons

Low pay with empty promises about raises, opportunities are mostly lateral and not upward. The benefits seem good at first, but when you actually use them, not as good or reliable as they seem. Four different ways required to clock in and out on slow computers, but management is not subject to the same system. Constant change in expectations. High turnover. Large workload. No sick days until PTO is used. Employees input not taken into consideration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Balance the difficulty of the job and the low pay with appropriate kindness and expectations and respect. Take responsibility for the high-turnover that can probably be avoided.
