I have been working at American Capital full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

American Capital is a great company to work for. Compensation packages are above average, and the general work environment is very pleasant. I am fortunate to work for a great manager who is very invested in employee satisfaction and development. In my observation, the different teams and departments within the company work together quite harmoniously. Plus, opportunities certainly exist to cross train and advance.

    Cons

I have no cons to present.

I have been working at American Capital full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

ACAS is involved in a wide variety of investment strategies, that leads to a lot of experience. Get the chance to work with some very good people. Comp/benefits are great. Quality work is noticed and rewarded. Always something new going on.

    Cons

Management doesn't always provide clear direction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pick a strategy/goal and focus the entire firm in that direction. Generally need to communicate better.

I have been working at American Capital full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

There's been a lot of change in the company in the time I've been here, which has afforded some excellent opportunites. On the whole, this has been the best company I've worked for, and I've worked for some good ones. Some of the nices perqs are the good pay and 100% company paid benefits. Executive Management are fair and decent people.

    Cons

Communications from the executive management could be improved. In all the time I've been here, the CEO has spoken to the general staff all of 2 or 3 times. Diversity is not a strong suit either.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be nice if executive management could reach out to the general staff more often, at least once or twice a year. Focus on creating a more diverse work force, particularly at the higher levels of management.

    Pros

Malon Wilkus, nice colleagues, young company with a future

    Cons

HR is rediculous. I'm surprised there have not been more suits relating to HR. Upper management does not care how departments are run.

I worked at American Capital full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Excellent private equity experience as there is great transparency in the firm. Lots of knowledge to be learned from the IC if you pay attention and are self-motivated.

    Cons

Poor communication between teams. Ambiguous roles and responsibilities within certain departments largely because of layoffs over the years. The company seems somewhat lost after the financial crisis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make some money so you can hire back the essential people that were laid off during the crisis.

    I worked at American Capital

    Pros

During it's growth phase, you learned a lot and were given a lot of responsibility

    Cons

The hours could be long. Morale was not great after the layoffs started in 2008. I'm not sure if morale is back to it's 2006 levels yet.

limited opportunities for advancement, lower than market compensation

I have been working at American Capital

    Pros

Excellent benefits package and fair compensation. There is a high degree of regard for each employees' well being. If when layoffs were conducted everyone was treated more than fairly. The firm has really taken a hit from the financial crisis so any downsides are related to unavoidable circumstances.

    Cons

Poor communication from management. Isolation of various functional groups. HR has done away with the performance management system so it is difficult to know how well you are performing. Some groups are plagued by underperformers who are kept around solely because of tenure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate with employees to receive more feedback on opportunities to operate business.
