I have been working at American Century full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

It's great to come to work knowing your profits fund a greater purpose. Our founder was a wonderful, insightful visionary. He started Amerian Century Investments with a greatt philosophy and then parlaid his wealth into the creation of the Stowers Insttitute of Medical Research in Kansas City, Missouri. GO onlikne & read our story.

    Cons

We're not perfect, but what company is? Most heavy complainers haven't worked anyywhere else. Our leaders need to have a broader perspective, beyond their own responsibiliies....the good of the whole.

    Pros

The work environment is OK for getting started. There are resources and support to help you get a start in the investment business. Most people who have a history with the company treat you with respect.

    Cons

The company has experienced a significant leadership change that has eaten away at the engagement of most employees. The company is in denial that is unprepared for a significant shift in product demand in the investment industry. The firm is quickly declining in market share in the financial services segment. .

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on what helped the company grow beyond a small investment shop 20 ears ago. It was outstanding leaders who supported aggressive, active money management. The firm is too busy trying impress the industry with new senior leadership that doesn't understand the company founder's belief of serving clients and delivering exceptional investment returns.

I have been working at American Century full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good overall company culture
Executive Team seems honest and open
    On site gym
Decent benefits (minus insurance) sabbatical program is nice but seems to be in the process of being phased out

    Cons

Depending on your area, can be a highly negative political environment. Heavy favoritism. Zero training or development. All resources and what few opportunities there are go to the inner circle. Knowledge is currency, so don't expect much collaboration or knowledge transfer - highly compartmentalized. Work life balance is a joke. Many managers actually don't seem to want to have anything to do with managing people

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a good hard look at some of your department management cultures. They contradict what executives preach they are trying to foster.

I have been working at American Century full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Can't quite think of one.
A paycheck? Good air conditioning in the hot summer. Going home on maybe the 3 days a year you can leave by 5:30,

    Cons

Management - numerous times they have been presented with the same issues and still nothing ever changes.
Like other poster said: extreme favoritism.
Managers who have zero management skills.
The place will work you to your grave if you let them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at your Managers! Listen to the complaints and actually do something. This company is nothing like the greatly led company I worked for when the great and sadly late Mr. Stowers was with us It is very sad what is happening to the company..He would never stand for what is going on to some employees.

Benefits are exceptional including insurance, year bonus, pay raise, and a lifecycle reimbursment

    Cons

    Salary is just average
401K match is a little low compared to average
    Career opportunities could be better

I have been working at American Century full-time

    Pros

American Century is still a place that values the work/life balance of its employees. The free on-site gym in Kansas City is also a plus.

    Cons

There is a serious lack of training, career path options, or opportunities for advancement. As such, the culture has deteriorated over the years. The fact that the facilities haven't been updated since the late 90's is also depressing, but the firm is addressing this issue over the next FIVE to SEVEN YEARS.

I worked at American Century as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

People were friendly and welcoming, pay was good. Work-life balance wasn't great for being an intern. A weekend here or there would be expected, and working late was common.

    Cons

Company culture wasn't doing so great. There seemed to be growing discontent among many people.

I worked at American Century full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Strong Midwest culture and community, profits go to support cancer research through Stowers Institute. Encourage leadership participation in annual celebrity golf tournament.

    Cons

Kansas City headquarters limits client growth potential when seen as a boutique regional provider. Global prospects appear limited. Lack passive investment options.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sell company airplanes to support hiring and expansion opportunities. It doesn't make sense to have 3 or 4 jets when sales and client usage is prohibited. (Seems like they only get used around golf tournament and CEO travel)
