    Pros

It is a national higher education association with national and international programs and membership. Working here, you get a good idea of the important issues in higher education and how they are being addressed at the top level of leaderships (members of ACE are presidents of higher education institutions, so the advocacy and programs are geared to their needs). Benefits are very, very good compared to other NGOs; salary scales are transparent and fair.

    Cons

It is difficult to rise past the entry level (or mid-level) if you do not have at least a Master's degree, and preferably a PhD. There is not much internal communication between units, so lateral mobility is also challenging. you have to be a very proficient net worker and top performer to be considered for a lateral move.

    Advice to Management

Change (seen from the upper mid level of the staff hierarchy) seems to be poorly managed. Advice would be for Executive managemet to communicate more... and make opportunities to listen as well.

    Cons

I really don't have anything negative to say about the organization. There is a rich culture, good work environment, good salary etc.

    Pros

Excellent Benefits Package, Lots of Paid Time Off, 35 hour work week, A Very Generous Employer Retirement Contribution, Great Location in Dupont Circle

    Cons

A culture of fear pervades and people are always concerned about getting fired, I know a lot of coworkers don't keep any personal belongings in their office so it's easier to get up and go when and if you get canned. Not very collaborative and departments work in a vacuum. There are cliques among staff and a lot of back stabbing that goes on between staff. The strategic direction is unclear.

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent with staff about decisions. Pay staff more equitably by position across the Council.

    Pros

ACE had a great many bright and capable employees. There was a great deal of expertise and some creativity apparent.

    Cons

There were ongoing issues of information not crossing team and department boundaries well, resulting perhaps in missed opportunities for more effective work.

    Advice to Management

Work to get folks out of silos.
