Pros
Great Brand /Company with decent benefits and pay
Cons
very policitcal. regardless of your tenure, you are only as good as your current years numbers. Successful sales roles earn higher targets and smaller territories and you could get pushed out.
Advice to Senior Management
Look at the average tenure in your Commercial Card division and try to stop the revolving door.
Pros
Great work life balance
Strong customer service ethic
Feature-rich products
Excellent marketing
Large budgets for marketing campaigns
Strong leadership of company
Cons
Very bureaucratic and hierarchical
Culture is very "corporate"
For many, hard to get promoted-mystery as to why some do
Resources are wasted on projects that are stopped suddenly
Lots of duplications in role
Advice to Senior Management
Create more informal environment between rank-in-file and management
Less emphasis on style, decks
Bridge gap between senior and middle management in terms of goals
Pros
worlwilde company where you can travel and change post everywhere
Cons
Worldwilde compagny where you must be the best to succed
Pros
American express is a good company for work life balance and advancement in finance. The company also has good facilities for children
Cons
american express as a company is consistent in performance but sometimes lacks the innovation and risk bearing attitude necessary for growth
Advice to Senior Management
management should look at expanding and thinking out of the box, breaking conventional boundaries to maximize growth in a digital environment
Pros
I really enjoyed most everything about working at American Express. I made great friends, the work was challenging and the benefits were good. I received regular salary reviews.
Cons
Although they tried every effort to make enough variance in schedules to accomodate everyone, sometimes the most appropriate shifts for my needs were already taken when it became my turn to select a shift.
Pros
incredibly competent and friendly colleagues
Cons
salary and benefits lag comparable NYC companies
Pros
AXP has a lot of smart people, as well a very friendly atmosphere with no sense of competitiveness. Good work / life balance
Cons
AXP has lower compensation than industry standards, as it is often viewed as a great training ground for leaders, thus not needing a necessarily high compensation in return for leadership and industry experience
Advice to Senior Management
As we are moving towards the digital age and all companies are looking to source talent, we are no longer competing with other payments businesses but other digital firms as well, and need to increase compensation to remain competitive with talent.
Pros
Opportunities for advancement. Good training. Excellent pay. Integrity
Cons
Should offer more opportunities to work from home.
Pros
Work life balance emphasized
Friendly Colleagues
Exposure to Senior Management is incomparable
Great atmosphere
Competitive Salary
Very structured internship program
Interns are treated like gold
Fun events outside of the workplace
Cons
Standing out can be difficult
Job tends to be very similar on a daily basis
Projects for interns should be more challenging
On certain days you can have a significant amount of free time
Advice to Senior Management
AmEx Executives as a whole are really great people, they treat all employees from interns to senior vice presidents equally and that is something that you can't put a price on. While leadership tends to make themselves very available to interns they don't seem to make themselves available to full time employees; so my only suggestion would be to make more of an effort to interact with everyone. In terms of salary; in this industry I believe it could be slightly more competitive.
Pros
*Room for advancement if you are willing to weather the storms (i.e.- constant restructuring, re-org's)
*If working virtual is important to you, this is the company culture
Cons
*Leadership are not industry experts
*many layers to get anything done. one department doesn't understand what the other is communicating.
Advice to Senior Management
Leadership needs to stop being the 'pretty picture' and get their hands dirty to get the job done.
