Smart people, challenging work, but incredibly passive aggressive culture.

Senior Manager (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at American Express full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe pay and benefits aren't terrible
The work life balance is great ( work from home, etc.)

Ability to move around and experience different business units

ConsPassive aggressive culture
Sometimes run in to fake colleagues who tell you one thing and your manager something else
Performance tends to be subjective, with networking often bearing more weight than actual work
Poor managers being promoted is shocking

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote a culture that fosters and encourages feedback while rewarding for actual work done

For corporate America, Amex has a great team culture and growth opportunity

Manager, Interactive Development (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at American Express full-time for more than a year

ProsPeople are genuine and care about your passions and interests. There's good opportunity for upward growth to a certain point, after which it becomes very competitive. Global opportunities if you do well.

ConsIn most areas of the company there's a lot of red tape and bureaucracy to navigate. Really need to be able to play politics and build relationships to do well at Amex.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the great work, but also try to empower employees by removing bureaucracy where possible.

Good company. Underpays. Very lovey dovey. Not a brilliant group of people for a bank.

Senior Manager (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at American Express full-time for more than 3 years

ProsWork life balance isn't bad.

ConsIts not a very smart group of people - (they are at the top but middle management isn't)
Very slow moving - lots of red tape.
Complicated structure which is always changing.

Relaxed culture, good people -- a bit on auto pilot

Finance Manager (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at American Express full-time for less than a year

ProsGreat culture and good people; good work/life balance in certain groups; lots of interesting speakers for professional development series

ConsPromotion after Manager is tough; work can become very routine very quickly; too much politics/bureaucracy so any decision takes too long and passive aggressiveness is rampant

Decent Company to work with, but nobody is indispensable

Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at American Express full-time for more than 3 years

ProsWork-life balance. Allows work from home, specially during family emergency & bad weather

ConsLayoffs every time they feel their profit is going down...not even losing, just decreasing from their expected net. I guess that is their business model. That's why nobody is indispensable. They will cut people, or even the whole dept., if they need to. It doesn't matter if you have an excellence award, or been a great contributor to company's bottom line.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe passionate not only to your bottom line, but to your dedicated employees as well.
