I have been working at American Express full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Ability to switch roles every 18 months. Good amount of vacation. Working with a lot of smart people from great backgrounds. Very varied roles. Most departments let you work from home a number of days a week.

    Cons

Too many displacements; constant change. Health plan is ok but has a 1200 deductible. 401K is very good.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less constant change for no apparent reason.

    Pros

Very flexible schedules to work from home or the office.

    Cons

Lots of corporate red tape when trying to bring on new business partners.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to find a way that managing suppliers is not a full time job so that we can focus on running the business.

I have been working at American Express full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    work-life balance is great; benefits are getting worse every year; leadership - 50/50, if you are lucky you can score with a good leader, otherwise you will be miserable for about 2 years until you are eligible to apply for a new role; the majority of the population is trying to "survive", i.e. moving laterally every two years;

    Cons

    there is no way you can complain from a leader; at Amex "bad" leaders are coached, not let go;

    - Visionary CEO and Management Team
    - Opportunity to move around frequently to build skills and experiences (18-24 mo. is avg time in role)
    - Strong brand
    - Amazing work/life balance

    Cons

    - Pay is low for industry, but fair given strong work/life balance
    - Some middle-managers are poor performers and given frequent re-orgs you may end up working on their teams

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Bring pay (base and bonus) in line with NY competitors, otherwise risk people leaving

    Pros

Contract extension was good for a long time. They will keep you if you are good at your job.

    Cons

Low rates and never improve even after years of service. Lot of politics, no direction to management. Constantly in reactive mode in terms of technology without any planning.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Planning Planning Planning and sticking to larger plan without changing directions every month. Listen to technical experts when making technical decisions.

I worked at American Express full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The corporate culture here is really amazing and the people are fantastic. In general, work-life balance is great.

    Cons

On-boarding experience didn't exist, one morning of discussions and nothing else. Definitely a meeting driven culture. Job rotations occur every 18 months which is fantastic for learning new skills, but means a lot of rework is done across teams as if you haven't just moved, someone else you're working with has, is about to, or joined with you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should focus on a more streamlined documentation process for role responsibilities due to the 18 - 24 month changes.

I worked at American Express full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

As a marketer Amex is a fantastic brand to work with as well as resources against marketing campaigns. Across my several roles I cut my teeth on traditional marketing to prospects across multiple channels and finally to content marketing speaking to both customers and prospects. Amex is incredible data driven meaning that we have the insights to make good decisions especially against marketing elements. I was always impressed by the intelligence of my colleagues.

    Cons

Working at Amex has a political element that can be difficult to swim with. At times information trickles down from the top even when rumors are extremely accurate. Annual reviews are strongly based on performance, that said the 360 degree feedback has a tendency to allow for grudge rehashing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encouragement of open discussions when tackling a problem. Often the only place to create consensus was outside of the meeting rather than within a meeting.
