    I have been working at American Express full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Great work/life balance. Friendly colleagues, depending on the group you end up in. Good benefits. Great office location. Good brand.

    Cons

    A culture as rapidly moving as molasses and lethal as quicksand. Gossip verging on back-stabbing is a norm. Unbelievably slow and risk-averse, reflected in hiring based on capabilities rather than aptitude - and leading to stagnation. So consensus-driven that nothing happens, and it feels like most management drive forward by checking themselves out in the vanity mirror. Dangerous HR policies to promote certain classes of individuals actually end up encouraging leaders to hire/promote really poor candidates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Shake up the culture more aggressively than with the "growth mindset" stuff, revise the organisation to eliminate governance by consensus in order to make the company more nimble. Educate the top 50% on how to innovate. Organise your data and make it available to make business decisions. Realise that the rest of the world is a LOT bigger than the US and should receive an appropriate amount of resource and funding. Fundamentally rethink your diversity policy (which scarcely exists).

    I have been working at American Express full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    They always pay the bonus

    Cons

    very political, you are assessed for what people do say about you rather than for your actual results. They called it leadership

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Change the HR structure in Europe, people not qualified to have their role. Listen to employees, and take actions on pulse.

    I have been working at American Express full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good working environment. Good team culture.
    Great office location - good benefits and indirect perks.
    Company is flexible with how you organise your work and where you want to work from as long as the work gets done.
    You will learn a lot.
    International company with opportunities.

    Cons

    Salary is not competitive and performance bonus depends much more on politics than performance.
    Extremely political - you'll go far if you play the game...
    When implementing changes, very little (hardly any) consultation with the teams involved.
    The goals are not aligned between the team; this can create a poor collaboration, internal hurdles and internal competition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Efforts should be made to retain good employees: increase the salary/give OTE to sales people, make sure performance is valued more than politics.

    I have been working at American Express full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    * Great work/life balance, but comes in peaks and troughs often
    * Excellent brand on your CV
    * Great community and peers/seniors to develop yourself
    * Good benefits and over average remuneration
    * Truly global blue chip with a lot of opportunities abroad
    * Great office locations
    * Very flexible with home-working
    * Good holiday allowances

    Cons

    * Need to improve support technology, like expense management systems, PTO trackers, etc
    * Could use CRM better
    * Salaries are on the peak of the bell-curve (or just to the wrong side), is a driver in some good people leaving
    * Need to remove some of the technological systems that are out of date and take up time from field-staff's day
    * sometimes you get thrown in the deep end if you're a joiner
    * training is below par
    * difficult to find adequate cover for some roles when you need PTO

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    * remove some of the operational aspects of field roles and give them to other teams
    * Have a better support system for when staff leave/join/PTO
    * Improve transition process for staff that are leaving/joining
    * invest in better training (not necessarily more expensive training, this is not synonymous)
