I worked at American Family Insurance

    Pros

Room for advancement within the company itself not the individual agency

    Cons

The pay was less than inviting for someone with almost 10 years experience.

    Pros

Stable financially, however will never become the big player in the industry they want to be.

    Cons

There were not a leader but a follower. If someone else h done it first they would follow their ideals about 1 or 2 yers later

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at American Family Insurance full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good work life balance. Pension and 401k Match.

    Cons

Hard to advance as opportunities are not there and management structure is constantly re-evalutated/reorganized. I will never make it even to mid-point of my pay scale as the company gives poor raises then adjusts the scale every few years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This company used to be better to their employees. Field people miss out on some perks than the office workers and our productivity is so high that we can not take flex time like people in the offices.

I worked at American Family Insurance full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Committed employees who give you the room to grow and advance your career with American Family. The Agent I worked for in the Madison area was great and very encouraging. I truly feel like your hard work gets noticed at AmFam. If it wasn't for my partner's job relocation I would have worked for the corporate office. Potentially 3 promotions within a 2 year span.

    Cons

Sometimes getting time off could be a hassle and you get an employee at corporate who could be more challenging to work with, but this was minor.

I worked at American Family Insurance part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

I worked for an individual agent and he was flexible with time off and family needs. Agent was also big on growth potential as well which was appreciated.

    Cons

Hands on training was lacking. A lot of learning modules on the computer but my agent was not in the office a lot which didn't allow for in-person training.

I worked at American Family Insurance full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Company values, People, Culture, Benefits, Work schedule, Leadership, Incredible opportunities as an intern, Excellent contacts, Midwest values (hard work, family, etc.)

    Cons

Slow processes (big corporation), Frustrations with certain members of management, Timelines on deliverables are generally 6 months or longer, so it takes forever to see a project to fruition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think it's important to have a start-up attitude in order to contend with the online and get-insurance-quick companies that have entered into today's arena. A little more fluidity in social media would be excellent, and more advertising geared toward younger generations and/or multicultural populations would be preferable. This is such a fabulous company, and I think it would be a shame if it went by the wayside because of structural deficiencies. Make sure that doesn't happen!

I worked at American Family Insurance (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great salary in the beginning, co-workers are great to work with and I had a few really great managers

    Cons

untrained managers with little people skills and managers not consistant across the department, bulling allowed with no upper management support or anyone in HR.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

monitor the managers and listen to the staff when there are more then one complaint. Concentrate a lot more on the management team being consistent and have, in place, a grievance team in HR. Build the trust in the staff that the company will have your back and you will get the high customer service goal.

I worked at American Family Insurance full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Other agents who can empathize

    Cons

    Don't provide benefits
Company blows through managers and agents
    Undertrained agents and staff
No work/life balance, they want you to give up everything, and even when you do, they can still take everything you have worked for away

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't set unrealistic goals for your agents and set them up for failure
Look at everyones unique situation and manage them accordingly instead of putting out a flat number to reach
