    Pros

This company is a great employer and seems to treat the employees right.

    Cons

The company is behind times backing the agent model for selling insurance. The agents don't produce enough and the company is in the negative every year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to listen to employees and make the change by reducing agents and increase online purchasing options in order to make insurance more affordable for potential customers.

    Pros

Great work/life balance which comes from the top through all of the management ranks. Pay is good for the area, not so good compared to the industry. Pension and 401k matching are nice and the people are awesome. It's easy to see why people come here and then wait for retirement

    Cons

Little to no movement once you get here. Company is in a shrinking mode and is moving to off-shore whatever it can.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote from within and keep the offshoring to a minimum, Insurnace is a personal business and doesn't model the out-sourcing world of other industries.

Current Employee - Insurance Agent in Everett, WA

    Pros

Good place to get your feet wet.

    Cons

Captive Agent. That means you can only write what they dictate, and when you leave, they retain your entire book of business. Long term out look is very poor for agents here. The start up plan may sound good, but in the end it's not worth it.

Former Employee - Agent Assistant in Atlanta, GA

    Pros

Decent policy portfolio for property/casualty. Good company to get into for entry level out of college.

    Cons

Terrible management verticals. Poor communication across different departments (sales, billing, underwriting). No health insurance offered for employees in agencies, only health insurance is offered to corporate employees.Claims are not taken seriously.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want entry level producers and assistant agents to share the stress/goals of the agent, compensate them as such. Agents start at $45,000 plus commission with commission and book of business. Assistants come in at $12 an hour with virtually no commission and no book of business. No health insurance. No benefits.

Former Employee - User Experience Designer in Madison, WI

    Pros

Pleasant landscaping at the corporate headquarters, smart co-workers; people really know their domains inside and out. Good benefits, nice bonus (in profitable years). Education reimbursement, sweet ergonomic chairs and adjustable standing desks. Alternate Fridays off.

    Cons

The tension between sales and underwriting makes experience design more difficult than it needs to be. Product owners do not have the authority to make tough calls, and are put in a difficult position trying to work both sides. The end product suffers and so does job satisfaction.

An entire department was eliminated because we were erroneously moved to a billable functional area in one of many reorganizations, which provided a disincentive for teams to use the expertise, which should have been free and up-front in the process, not tacked on at the end and costly. While the group was in its death throes, we were assigned a new manager who did everything in his power to demotivate the group.

Overall it was great at the beginning, and became a poor fit for me towards the end. Everyone's experience here is different based primarily on whether your leadership has support internally, or lacks it. If your leadership lacks support, there is little you can do to change this. Move on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get experienced product owners so they can make tough decisions for the business.

Large company, lots of opportunities, good facilities, good city/location. Good management overall.

There are some bad managers, as with most places. Sometimes the culture is low on accountability.
