Great environment, great customer service/cash handling experience

    Cons

    Pros

Creative, dynamic, and collaborative work environment. Great people, expert insight and knowledge. Work on very cool and exciting projects entirely new to the insurance industry. Plus, there's an Innovation Lab.

    Cons

Direction and communication not always clear. Projects can go stale, work can slow. Not always the case, but sometimes just out of your control due to a lack of immediate need/vision.

    Advice to Management

Embrace Innovation in Insurance. As technologies continue to emerge and disrupt the landscape of Insurance, innovative minds within strategy departments are important now more than ever!

I have been working at American Family Insurance full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The company is growing by virtue of acquisitions and is preparing for nationwide expansion.

    Cons

Job security is a concern if you fail to hit a variety of performance metrics, some of which are beyond your control. There is a decreasing emphasis on employee satisfaction. The workload is heavy and stressful. When employees leave, they do not replace the person and other employees absorb the workload. In recent years, several tenured employees in good standing were displaced and lost their jobs due to several corporate consolidations and/or reorganizations.

I worked at American Family Insurance full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

As corporations go, I would say American Family is one of the better corporate entities out there; they really do put the customer first and tend to pay out claims even when they legally can deny you. Very friendly atmosphere and easy (almost lackadaisical) work hours (did someone say 2 hour lunch?). Depending on your area you can come and go as you please and unless your boss is a timekeeper, you can pretty much mail in your job.

    Cons

Upward mobility is non-existent even though there are HR posters littered throughout the complex encouraging you to advance/invest in your career. Please take only a job you will be happy in, because once you get here you are pigeon-holed unless one of the many VPs takes a liking to you and then mysteriously you can skip over all kinds of levels and get a sweet paying gig with little responsibility. Pay is ok, but raises are set by the company as a whole – so say 2% (which would be a good raise at AmFam) and then there is a Comp Ratio to which everyone must adhere to. So if you are over the mid-point of your salary range you won’t get that 2% - you’ll get a pre-calculated portion of it – so as you approach the top of your pay scale, your 2% will be refactored down to 1.5% or less and so on….

    Advice to Management

The rampant cronyism is so pervasive you don't even try to hide it anymore. Please hire the correct/qualified person for the job - play golf with your golfing buddy - don't hire him/her!

I have been working at American Family Insurance full-time

    Pros

Lots of room for advancement. People seem to truly care about the work they do and the customers they support. Pace of work is moderate, which is perfect for me!

    Cons

There are a lot of layers of management. Makes for advancement opportunities but getting answers quickly on questions can be slow sometimes.

    Advice to Management

Start working more to share out high level company decisions on a more regular basis, this would be so helpful in being more effective at time management and working closest to the values and desired results.

I have been working at American Family Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Valued as an employee (not just a number to fill seats and take calls). High salary for an entry level position. Lots of opportunity for growth through online courses, mentoring, audits, and different subject matters pertaining to claims. Company encourages learning about other departments and career paths.

    Cons

Very unclear attendance policy that is not consistent among managers. The company's only written position on this is "come to work". FMLA is a must if you have children or any sort of chronic medical condition.
