I have been working at American Funds

    Pros

Benefits are great. Pay is good. Been there 10 years and get five weeks vacation. Retirement without any matching is 15%. Bonus week of vacation for every five years of employment.

    Cons

Went from a service center to more of a call center. A lot of temporary workers with 18 months max contract are employed. The quality suffers some.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In a hiring frenzy like they were in 2004. Work on volume predictions and manage staffing accordingly.

I have been working at American Funds

    Pros

The benefits and people were very nice.

    Cons

It became a call center, the Team Managers were weak and always trying to prove their worth. Many people that would have made great supervisors would never get a chance and others you would have no clue how they got into the position. Also Team Managers were confrontational and no matter how well you did do something there was always feedback.

    I worked at American Funds

    Pros

Amazing benefits and comfortable work environment

    Cons

Overtime and lack of room for growth when in the call center

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers that have been out of touch with the calls are harder to communicate with, many young, talented employees are overlooked.

    Pros

Everything they do, they do very well. There is no half-stepping with this company! The health insurance and other benefits are phenomenal. I've noticed that the ones with negative things to say seem to be be folks who've had very little time in the job market or they've been with the company entirely too long and have forgotten what a good company it is!

    Cons

They are very detail oriented - the demands of the industry require it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep doing what you're doing!

    Pros

The company offers excellent products and most employees truly believe in the value. Great bonuses and retirement plan.

    Cons

In larger processing departments, associates constantly shifting among teams and different team managers/mgrs. Lack of consistency, expectations, and information.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Engage associates in change. Keep them informed and involved as much as possible.

    Pros

The health benefits are very good as are the fancy coffee machines!

    Cons

Politics and more politics. You schmooze with management and play both sides then you get to stay---even if you don't work hard, you take long lunches, gossip all day, shop on line, disappear for lengthy periods of time, have attitude - does not matter IF you schmooze with your manager who, schmoozes with his/her mgr and so on up the chain of "how many layers of mangers"? There are more senior managers than one can count and many have no clue as to what is going on. Bring back some of those that were laid off in January! They were the true workers who were dedicated and cared about what they did. They were conscientious, diligent and reliable. The nuts and bolts. Now, no one cares --just there to get a pay check.
So sad that upper management talks about 'the culture" It is a terrible culture where people really don't matter. Kind of like a sweat shop!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You are collecting the big bucks but really do not know how to manage you are delegators and many don't know how to get it done, How can we work for a manager who does not know what our job entails? We ask a question and are told "Go see so and so..."
Who made the lay-off decisions of 2014? Bad management did! If they would have taken a different approach, things would be better for a lot of people..
There are a few good eggs in the basket but not many - so thank you to those of you who really care about us.

    Pros

Pay and benefits are very good. The San Antonio Campus is beautiful with onsite Café, Gym, little Pocket Parks, Underground Parking.

    Cons

Co-Workers that do not know you, don't work with you, may never have spoken to you feel the need to, and are allowed to give "feedback" to your Manager about silly things like what you appear to feel like.

    Pros

Depending on location, organic vegetable garden, all natural lighting in buildings, underground parking, healthy choices for breakfast and lunch, pre-made meals for dinner, and fitness facilities.

    Cons

technology is stuck in the late 80's and early 90's. Management inept, progress takes forever to move forward, too much consolidation of positions, gender dominance works against other gender. If you are of a certain gender and want advancement it is a decent place. If you are the other gender and have no desire to ever advance, then it is for you too.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

use technology, change your current paradigm, think outside the box, listen to your employees
