I have been working at American Greetings

    Pros

This is a transparent company, with a positive and engaged attitude towards it's employees. I have found all of coworkers across departments to be excellent people to work with, and the teamwork and professionalism to be likewise present. This is also a highly creative and engaged group of people to work with. Individualism and creativity is encouraged. Diversity is encouraged: I see colleagues who are not afraid to hide their sexual orientation (gay), and are not penalized in their careers. I experience a strong multicultural corporate environment, in which differences are welcomed as a strength for the company. This is a company where you can create your job description by reaching towards your aspirations, interests, and strengths, and where you can find an effective work/life balance. I love it here.

    Cons

its a tough company to get into. I worked there for nearly a year as a contractor, before getting brought on board as a full time employee. Others I have talked to have up to spent several years as contractors, before getting hired in house. On the other hand, the wait is worth it.

I worked at American Greetings as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

The culture of AG is amazing. From Starbucks runs every other hour with friends to the awesome employee events. AG focuses on employee happiness, and they're good at it.

    Cons

Be careful of what department you decide to work for. They tend to recruit marketing and management majors for departments that have an all-analytic job description. Though I loved the company, looking at excel documents all day wasn't all that hands-on and creative. That being said, I had many friends who loved their jobs, which had more of a that creative feel. Go with fit, not just whose interviewing you for a job on their team.

    Pros

Good pay and benefits, very laid back place to work as long as you're working. You won't get fired unless you're trying too.

    Cons

its difficult to get off of night shift once your there. The place could operate better with more employee involvement in decision making at the departmental level.

I worked at American Greetings full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The people / culture is pretty good. Nice mix of creative and business-oriented people. They develop their employees pretty well, which made this a great 1st job out of grad school for me. There is a sense of corporate pride.

    Cons

Nepotism at the highest levels, which sets a bad example for those of us not related who want to work our way up. A fair amount of corporate bureaucracy. Business relies on antiquated IT systems. (i.e. green text on the computer screens!) Pay is a little below average it seems, so top talent seems to leave frequently.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Eliminate nepotism at the top.
