I worked at American Greetings part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It's a good job to have if you are looking for flexible hours and days. Its good for working around another job, school, or family obligations. You get to work independently or with a team depending on the job. Good online training program.

    Cons

Not enough time given to complete tasks. You would have to take on too many accounts to get reasonable amount of hours. Upper management not accessible or helpful when needed. Starting pay is too low compared to other jobs of this type.

    Advice to Management

Assign reasonable amount of time to complete tasks. Realize that the merchandiser is the face of the company and gets the product out on the sales floor. Don't treat them like they are disposable.

Good company to work for, but finding the right "fit" in the area you work in is important.

I have been working at American Greetings full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Creative culture and diverse employees. There's a degree of "fluidity" to gain new knowledge and develop new skills if you desire amongst different departments/groups.

    Cons

Steep learning curve of the systems and the nuance of products. A year is what it takes for me to feel comfortable and competent on the job.

    Advice to Management

Annual goal-setting and self appraisal can be streamlined, as they typically don't reflect reality and employees' day-to-day priorities.

    Cons

Merchandisers aren't paid much, so we have a lot of turnover

Worst experience in my career. Overworked. Coworkers are without education, no manners. Treat each other bad.

    Pros

Do not know. None for me.

    Cons

Making fun of your accent if you have one. Give you less salary if they could. So much work to save company money. Overtime 5 days a week plus pushing work from home. Terrible unprofessional employees and managers.

    Advice to Management

Get people with education as directors and managers. Improve horrible culture.

I worked at American Greetings full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with! Good pay with fun products to work on. Its not everyday that you try to have serious meetings about farts :)

    Cons

-Layoffs every year for "restructuring" -No obvious career path or room for growth -Culture is poor with too many layers of management

    Advice to Management

Value the employees that work so hard for you. Its not easy to get find good creative people, and if you work them to death they will leave, and then the products will suffer.

    Pros

If you're looking for a flexible schedule, this is a job to consider.

    Cons

For field associates who do all the "grunt" work, compensation is low as compared to other merchandising positions. This is only a part time job so there are no benefits and there is no advancement.

    Advice to Management

First the company "thank you" trinkets are a waste. If upper management really wanted to invest in their employees, we would be compensated better ($$). If you receive little or no support from your immediate supervisor, there is no one else to help you.

    Pros

The schedule is very flexible, perfect for someone with kids. You can pick the time of day you work

    Cons

Hours fluctuate each week, busiest around holidays. Pay is not great and limited upward mobility opportunities .

    Advice to Management

Loyalty should be rewarded with higher increases, based on performance of course

I have been working at American Greetings part-time

    Pros

I loved the flexible hours-set your own, working by myself, greeting and helping customers

    Cons

Strict time restraints are set and expected. The public is very disrespectful of displays, making messes. It is impossible to clean up, organize, stock, do inventory and orders in extremely small amounts of time.

    Advice to Management

You spend more on training, just to see people quit because of ridiculous time constraints. Instead, give more hours to allow successful results, in order to gain employee retention. In the long run, you'll pay less for training. (I was putting in over 30 hours per week to train and clean up what was left when there was no one to do the job for the first 3-4 months, then cut to sometimes 5 hrs per week. My travel between stores equaled more than that. The average store demanded 2-3 hours per workday, sometimes more.)

I worked at American Greetings part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Somewhat flexible hours during summer and early fall. Nice products

    Cons

The workloads are completely impossible to do in the time allotted. The only way to get the job done is to go well over the assigned hours (which is not allowed), or work off the clock. The most ridiculous requirement was the seasonal resets, which occur at the start of every holiday. Part-time merchandisers are expected to remove and discard the hundreds of remaining cards, put out all of the new product, set up several sidecaps, sideracks, and displays, all in one day. This is impossible for one person to do in one day, even though it is all supposed to be done in a few hours. On the few occasions where management sent a helper, it still took 8 hours to complete. I never went over hours at this company, and my department wound up being a wreck. The only people getting the job done are getting help or working off the clock. It's just not worth it working so few hours, for so little pay.

    Advice to Management

Please hire more than one merchandiser per location and give more hours. This is not a job that can be done by one person in only a few hours per week.
