I have been working at American Institute Of Physics for more than 10 years

    Pros

The employees are great. The CEO talks to everyone regularly and keeps staff as current as possible about what is going on. Salaries are good and the work load is OK. Bonuses are almost non-existent.

    Cons

Changes in the organization have made the future unpredictable. The budget seems to be getting tighter and turning the publishing arm into a subsidiary makes the mission of the corporate side harder to figure out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be as open as possible about the future.

I have been working at American Institute Of Physics for more than 8 years

    Pros

Company is full of people at the top of their game, benefits are quite encouraging, nice building.

    Cons

The introduction of a Halogen performance appraisal system means that its practically impossible to get a cost-of-living pay rise going forward. In particular, the system tries to force you into pre-determined roles which is against what most of the people employed here do. Although the building is nice its isolated from the University of Maryland and its not as easy to get downtown as you would think.

I worked at American Institute Of Physics

    Pros

treated well, nice people to work with.

    Cons

Will ship your job over seas if it saves the company money. Many loyal people with decades long careers were let go.

    Pros

Always cared about their employees. Managers and supervisors more than fair in reviews and daily interactions.

    Cons

Upper management, in looking to save money, keeps downsizing and outsourcing jobs.

I worked at American Institute Of Physics full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good skills and career opportunities in technology and publishing. Employee benefits are fairly decent for non-profit organization. Work environment is friendly & professional.

    Cons

Not for profit causes tight range in promotion and performance salary increases. Advancement opportunities few and far between although there are many long-term (10+ yrs) employees.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at American Institute Of Physics full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Decent pay; fair level of autonomy; fair level of work-hours flexibility; very good benefits; gym on-site; problem-free location and parking; respected organization; high-quality leaders

    Cons

limited upward mobility; not independent enough (too enmeshed with the organizations it serves), which limits our creativity; management does not believe in tele-working; long-term health of the company is tenuous because many changes are taking place in the publishing, and in science-research funding

Great place to work for 6 years - but I was there over 7.

I worked at American Institute Of Physics full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good benefits. My IT salary was competitive

    Cons

Biggest customer was taking business away causing a money squeeze and a lot of finger pointing blame games.

Very risk adverse. It is against company policy for current employees or managers to give recommendations of former employees (afraid of getting sued over a bad recommendation?) So you can't use your former supervisor as a reference until he/she leaves the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop driving people crazy by constantly changing priorities.
