I have been working at American Red Cross as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Everyone is friendly and wants to work there. I volunteered in a California location. There are always multiple projects going on. There are many people involved who just want to make a difference.

    Cons

There does not seem to be much room for growth or working up the ladder for someone who is looking for a full-time, paid position. Red cross benefits a lot from its volunteers/interns and part time workers.

I have been working at American Red Cross full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great people with many having a selfless attitude
More informal work environment and dress code
Make lots of contacts in Emergency Management and local government

    Cons

    VERY low pay
VERY long hours with VERY unreasonable expectations
High turnover, been here less than a year and 4 people have quit out of my office alone
Executives make 6 figure salaries with bonuses while most of the management level work horses earn closer to 35k so there is a massive pay gap
No opportunity for advancement and no raises.....ever
Often times they will hire outside the organization rather than promote their own
Aside from house fire cases, we only really provide services that arent really needed like handing out water to firefighters
EXTREMELY disorganized...Ive never ever seen an organization that doesnt even know what vehicles they have or where they are
They claim to have "service to armed forces" as a primary mission, but charge PTO days for military training, so as a reservist, Im on average 3 days in the hole every year before I even make my PTO days.
Dont plan on training when you get to your job. Most of us got thrown in with no guidance whatsoever
Volunteers tend to be self centered and you have to stroke their egos to get them to do anything or they threaten to quit

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop being greedy, create a pay scale like the federal government, train the people you bring in, have some loyalty to your employees, and be realistic in your expectations

I have been working at American Red Cross full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great mission. You know the work you do helps people in need.

    Cons

Lots of change. Change that makes work life balance nearly impossible. People at National Headquarters could care less about their employees. Management is not good from top to bottom. With all the change in the last year you find every manager and department watching out for themselves. There is not sense of team. Lots of finger pointing. Nobody appreciates the hard work but be sure they will let you know if you make a mistake.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to focus on keeping employees. Don't you see all the turn over? Need more work life balance. Why give somebody PTO if you never approve employees to take vacation? Encourage your employees, nurture your employees. Desperate need of better training programs. Stop with all the change, it's almost impossible to keep up with.

I have been working at American Red Cross full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great company mission, nationally known name. Great people who want to help others is the binding force which drives the organization. Strategically in position to do good across the nation.

    Cons

ARC-the humanitarian organization which treats its employees inhumanely!! Donors are viewed as a part of the supply chain instead of customers. Poor infrastructure and business model for effective business management. Gross negligence in spending. This is a sinking ship!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

CLEAN HOUSE with current management. Show leadership and develop your employees with meaningful training. Open communication and transparency helps too.

Once a Wonderful Organization. Nationalized into Mediocrity.

I have been working at American Red Cross

    Pros

The ideals of the organization still resonate

    Cons

Since Gail McGovern has become CEO, the Red Cross has adopted the AT&T model of management. Decisions are no longer locally based, but decided by a select few who manage to screw things up. We have seen this in response to disaster services (i.e. Hurricane Sandy), Health and Safety, and Blood Services. Now, the employees left are being set up for failure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is time for Gail McGovern to resign and take with her all the AT&T managers before the Red Cross closes its doors for good.
