    - Working with a great group of team players & friendly customers
    - Excellent work conditions

    - Better lunch room so that co-workers can gather together

I worked at American Solar Electric full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

A great place to learn a lot about renewable energy generally and photovoltaic systems specifically.

    Cons

The leaders, Will and Sean, often makes promises that they have no intention of keeping. They don't pay very well and don't seem to understand that the quality of the product is a direct reflection of they way they treat their workers. Most of the real problems with the company are the direct result of poor management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People don't want to work for people, who say one thing, but do another, especially when it involves pay and career advancement. The management needs to take some responsibility. Oh, and stop using nepotism as a management tool--it's gross.

I have been working at American Solar Electric full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The management are living, breathing human beings located in a physical office space that is mainly harmless.

    Cons

Where should I begin. The management resemble psychopaths who feed off of doing unpleasant things those most directly responsible for their own livlihood. It's self-defeating and ridiculous. The new logo says it all--it's outline resembling that of a military patch, it contains the image of someone holding a black sun, it almost looks like a bomb. It is an accurate representation of the doom and military-style discipline lurking within.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some help. I worry that you may be suffering from mental illness. You are destroying everything that you had others build for you. The results speak for themselves.

I have been working at American Solar Electric full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

It can be a lot of fun, especially when working out of site of the supervisors. I learned a lot and met great people, lifelong friends even.

    Cons

The management is diabolical. They play favourites and let their friends advance in the company while treating the others like a bunch of recalcitrant slaves. It's a wierd vibe around the office, where the power and control hierarchy attempt to manage every aspect of the business. Time off is always a battle with management, even if you've earned PTO. They tend to fire people, or lay them off, very few leave on their own terms.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your attempts to control every aspect of your worker's lives only causes resent and leads to sloppy working practices. Try to be good, decent, fair people and everything will be fine.

I worked at American Solar Electric full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Some really great people work or have worked here. Unfortunately, all the good ones have left, were laid off or are actively seeking other employment.

    Cons

They treat you like a child--they actually keep tabs on when you arrive & leave to make sure you work a full 8 hours each day and that you never arrive later than 8:04 AM. (Almost everyone is a salaried employee too!) They have a lame PTO policy and don't pay out any unused earned time upon termination. You're required to use PTO if you don't work at least 8 hours in a day--whether or not you already worked over 40 hours that week. Absolutely no flexibility on work schedules. Pay is awful and although annual reviews are promised, they aren't ever actually given. They recently stopped their contributions to the company 401(k) plan due to finances. Don't cross the new CEO (2nd wife of former CEO) or you won't keep your job. She has her hands in EVERYTHING and she contaminates EVERYTHING she touches!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let managers manage their employees without the CEO's constant meddling. The HR department should be a voice and resource for the employees, not solely the CEO. Treat employees with respect.

I worked at American Solar Electric full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

There was a real sense of camaraderie and achievement by staff. Sustainable practices are maintained throughout the office space. The materials used are quality and on the cutting edge.

    Cons

First and foremost, they pay slave wages. Other than that in 2011 the company took a radical turn and has never recovered. 99% of the start-up staff was let go; the innovators, the motivators, and the achievers. What remains is a shell, even the logo has changed to represent something not so sunny and bright. The new CEO is diabolical.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you hadn't mixed work with pleasure you wouldn't be in this position. Get rid of her.

you can learn a lot about PV
    can travel a lot

    Cons

    the management is horrible
    it's a dogfight

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give employees room for growth and treat them like professionals. The pressure cooker work environment is soul destroying.

Management changes (01/2011) were necessary to some degree; unfortunately the morale has steadily declined since then.

I worked at American Solar Electric

    Pros

The co-founder Will Herndon is probably the most genuine person you'll ever meet. Also, the products are from quality suppliers.

    Cons

Poor sense of direction and unrealistic expectations. Insatiable higher-ups created a difficult environment to thrive in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Implement consistency and clarity for future outlook/directives; increase morale by rebuilding some sort of support system back for employees.

    Pros

    Friendly co workers
easy to work with the other people
    Knowledge gained can be valuable
    decent benefits package for employees.

    Cons

    Pay was too low
Management has trouble following through on things
    No employee Loyalty
Outcome of the company shouldn't be reliant upon the sales team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do a better job at maintaining the company. Many things need to change in order to remain successful in that industry.

I worked at American Solar Electric

    Pros

Learn something new. There are a few knowledgeable people regarding PV systems.

    Cons

Compensation was very low. No room for professional growth. Quality of work is a joke, especially within the construction department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The work is not hard. Build a better product and be more efficient. Recognize people with potential and let them grow, challenge them, compensate accordingly. Get rid of the bums. Hire actual tradesmen, not a joe off the street.
