    Pros

The people there are smart, friendly, and professional. The benefits are decent and reasonable. The office environments look and feel great.

    Cons

The student loan industry is in a mess after the regulation shake up recently. Since then, the company has been struggling to seek new business opportunities, and are not successful yet.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maybe you need to think out of the box and see what you can do with your great IT and business teams. People are your most valuable assets, not the industry you were in.

    Pros

The Public Mission, benefits, descent salary, culture, life/work balance, etc..

    Cons

Biz and IT Strategy is challenging, Revenue is dropping, somewhat bipolar -either too much process or too little, no retrospections and process improvement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase accountabilities and transparency. Reward individual and team success, don't sugarcoat and fix the failures.

    An organization in extreme transition

I have been working at American Student Assistance

    Pros

Great quality of life for most (provided you want a face to face environment (not much telecommuting or schedule flexibility). Most work 8:30-4:30. The office is a ghost town at 5. Competitive base pay and generous benefits, tremendous (virtually unlimited) budget for training and development, lovely offices, casual/informal environment, genuinely nice people.

    Cons

The business and revenue model were entirely disrupted four years ago, the organization has a revenue/sustainability problem and can't seem to course correct. The senior leadership team lack the skills/knowledge for the new business model. Lots of politics and changes in direction.

    Pros

Many people have worked there a long time and have lots of specialized knowledge and insight. Friendly coworkers. Good location.

    Cons

Sometimes hard to figure out what upper management wants and that will slow the process unless there is a complete understanding.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management allowed staff to take facilitate and head projects. It was challenging but an effective way to learn.

    Pros

People! The people at ASA are the best. They all care about the company and are passionate about what they do.
The mission to help students is really easy to get behind.

    Cons

Now that FFELP is gone, the company is having a difficult time finding its new center. They are working to develop a center to help students online using 50 years of experience.

    Pros

ASA has excellent benefits including a Defined Benefit pension plan as well as the equivalent of a profit sharing plan. You do not find those benefits at many private, for profit, companies. Salaries are above average and the educational benefits are very liberal. There are many hard working people in the ISD division and there is an opportunity to work with new technologies.

    Cons

There are too many layers of management and often they do not communicate well. New Projects can get out of control which results in excess monies being spent to keep things on track . The group that maintains the core loan processing application is excellent and works well together. All in all I feel that ASA is an above average working environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try and get the politics out of the management team.
