I worked at American Student Assistance full-time

    Pros

People in general are great to work with, they help you with training, they have a good technology base, you will be the coolest IT kid on the block with little experience in web and sql development.

    Cons

Majority of IT employees with few exceptions have a basic technological grasp, your current IT skills will not improve at a competitive market rate unless you take it upon yourself to stay current.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To survive new business model, IT is clearly more important now than before. Many incorrect and sub-optimal implementations of good technology exist today so know who your few real talents are, hire more and let them drive under management structure that rewards talent, not politics.

I have been working at American Student Assistance full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Continued opportunity for professional development, corporate culture, and the people are the best! Money knowledge for college - and beyond is a mission I am proud to support. The student loan debt crisis is real and will have negative impacts on the economy far into the future, if something doesn't change. This organization has is making a difference one student or potential student at a time.

    Cons

I have no cons to share regarding this organization.

    Pros

The people there are smart, friendly, and professional. The benefits are decent and reasonable. The office environments look and feel great.

    Cons

The student loan industry is in a mess after the regulation shake up recently. Since then, the company has been struggling to seek new business opportunities, and are not successful yet.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maybe you need to think out of the box and see what you can do with your great IT and business teams. People are your most valuable assets, not the industry you were in.

    Pros

The Public Mission, benefits, descent salary, culture, life/work balance, etc..

    Cons

Biz and IT Strategy is challenging, Revenue is dropping, somewhat bipolar -either too much process or too little, no retrospections and process improvement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase accountabilities and transparency. Reward individual and team success, don't sugarcoat and fix the failures.

    An organization in extreme transition

    • Work/Life Balance

I have been working at American Student Assistance

    Pros

Great quality of life for most (provided you want a face to face environment (not much telecommuting or schedule flexibility). Most work 8:30-4:30. The office is a ghost town at 5. Competitive base pay and generous benefits, tremendous (virtually unlimited) budget for training and development, lovely offices, casual/informal environment, genuinely nice people.

    Cons

The business and revenue model were entirely disrupted four years ago, the organization has a revenue/sustainability problem and can't seem to course correct. The senior leadership team lack the skills/knowledge for the new business model. Lots of politics and changes in direction.

    Pros

People! The people at ASA are the best. They all care about the company and are passionate about what they do.
The mission to help students is really easy to get behind.

    Cons

Now that FFELP is gone, the company is having a difficult time finding its new center. They are working to develop a center to help students online using 50 years of experience.
