I worked at American Technology Services full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The training opportunities are endless. You can advance at your own pace and in the technical or management arena of your choice.
It's a very collaborative environment and the staff friendly and good to work with. It seems like there are about 20 people who have been there more than 5 years so you have a great knowledge base of folks when you need help.
The culture is good. There are quarterly events, regular communication from management, recognition, advancement/promotions, etc.
The benefits are good and the company pays for most.

    Cons

As with any IT position, sometimes it feels like a 24 X 7 job. The good news is that they are very good about giving time off to help out especially when there's big projects that keep you after hours and on weekends.
    No 401k match.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the communication and open door philosophy.

    Pros

This company is located at the heart of Virginia and Close to metro.
    Small company with high visibility.
Some manager are good, but not all.
    Free Soda and Coffee.

    Cons

    Management is not very understanding.
    Very rude managers and staff.
They want you to be billable, or else you are fired the next day.
They are stingy in most of the payment they make you.
They don't pay mileage if you work at a client place more than certain no of days.
They hire workers who are highly skilled with less salary. (not sure how they manage to do this)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please treat your employees with some emotions. Don't treat them as slaves.

I have been working at American Technology Services full-time

    Pros

Salary and benefits are fair. They are competitive not exceeding the market.

Empowerment - you really do have the flexibility and support to make decisions without a bunch of red tape. Just watch out if you make a wrong decision.

The people at ATS are great!

    Cons

Top management - great as long as you're doing well and billable. Any little snags along the way will be held against you indefinitely. There is no true forgiveness, grudges are held and it will reflect in your opportunities and reviews.

Leadership communication from the top executives to managers is not clear or consistent. There seems to be no specific mission or path to follow. Sometimes it's about making money and other times it's just do whatever to keep the customers happy.

Work / Life balance is tough. There is flexibility to work remotely and take time when needed, but you're still working very long hours. It's very hard to maintain this level long term.

The company grows at a very slow pace so not much room for advancement.

Vacation and Sick hours do not seem competitive to others IT companies in the area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to employees. Let managers actually manage and not be micromanaged from the top.

I worked at American Technology Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

. Fast paced - if you are motivated, you can really accelerate your skills and grow.
. Responsibility - you get responsibility if you are willing, to impact the project outcomes.
. Direct client communication - if you are capable, you can directly communicate with clients. If you like customer interaction and come from a mid-sized or large corp, you'll know that this is a rare thing. It can be motivating to see your contributions are directly visible to clients.
. Flexibility - management is flexible about need-based remote working and time off.
. Environment - if you take time to get to know your co-workers, most are genuinely good people. Many employees have been with the company for years.

If you have multiple technical skills to stay billable then you will like this place.

    Cons

All of the above are also cons if you come from a slow paced, large corporation or if you're expecting to just sit around, particularly in any of the consulting positions.

I have been working at American Technology Services

    Pros

Management is very good about time off and working from home.
    Relaxed atmosphere. No micromanagement.
People are friendly for the most part.

    Cons

    Work is not very motivating.
It isn't an 'exciting' place to work
Communication between departments and management level is poor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would put in place a more open, communicative process. Work is very unsociable. Employees need to interact more and get excited about what they do.

I worked at American Technology Services full-time

    Pros

    New office space
    Free sodas/coffee
    Decent office location
Most people in the office are friendly to your face

    Cons

    - Lack of documentation and process for almost every department.
    - Not enough staff to do the last minute work coming in.
    - No one knows who is doing what or what departments do what.
    - Benefits are poor at best.
    - Even though the company website states, "we listen. were accountable", it seems most managers do not listen to the employees and do not hold employees accountable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire people that will implement processes / documentation. Get better benefits. Stop overworking your staff.

Get Some Experience, but Don't Overstay

I worked at American Technology Services

    Pros

Depending on which department you work in, you'll become exposed to network support, Web development, hosting, and IT consulting. There is average pay for non-managerial staff. Benefits are basic (medical, dental, vision). You'll get a few holiday, sick, and vacation days too. Telecommuting options are available. There is complimentary soda, coffee and water. Parking is available, but the lot fills up fast. Your tenure with the company will be rewarded with company-branded items, like duffle bags, etc..

    Cons

There is no path for career advancement, even if you seek it out. You'll feel that you have no ownership in this company or a voice regarding its direction. The role you are hired in is the role you'll stay in until you opt to leave. As a technology company, it tends to use dated software and development methods. At times, management will demonstrate unprofessional etiquette in their dealings with you. The company doesn't celebrate its successes, and comes across as frugal with its company gatherings. There is no company-matching on retirement. Customers often complain about the company's lack of quality in its products and services. Turnover is very high.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work toward providing career tracks for professionals who would like to stay with your company. Celebrate employee successes with recognition and financial rewards, instead of insignificant ones like company-branded items. If you're not going to offer tangible financial incentives, then at least offer a company-match to your retirement plan. Have some fun "outside the office" company outings. Finally, if you truly wish to grow your company, focus on quality, not quantity.
