I have been working at American Type Culture Collection

    Pros

Supports worldwide research mission, most regular staff nice people, valuable scientific material. Benefits reasonably generous.

    Cons

Terrible pressure to drive $, while most employees are paid poorly, and promotions are almost impossible. Senior management arrives and disappears overnight, with little input from regular employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dump Cypess, and rethink the whole non-profit/profit thing. Seriously.

I have been working at American Type Culture Collection full-time

    Pros

Easy to get hired. Relaxed environment. Friendly coworkers. Mission driven. Good benefits.

    Cons

Salaries are not competitive. Turnover is high. Company is top heavy with upper management while understaffed at the lower levels due to the inability to keep/attract quality employees. Promotion is difficult, too focused on advanced degrees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop spending money on the ever increasing number of senior management positions.

    Pros

You have the opportunity to meet some really bright people

    Cons

Depending on the group you are with you could be working long hours or have nothing to do. A lot of favoritism within groups and a lot of times management don't see eye to eye with each other which results in conflicting messages to workers. Compensation is horrible and career opportunities are rare so a lot of the bright people who work at the company leave due to frustration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of some people in management and hire more lab personnel....

    Pros

The people who work at ATCC are truly there to serve the mission of the organization, and are, generally, good at their job, friendly, and cooperative.

    Cons

The fish rots from the head down, and the CEO, Ray Cypess, is one of the worst CEOs I've ever worked for. He has a saying, "If I only say it once, ignore it." (Because he'll probably forget it!) "If I say it twice, you should take notice." (But I'll probably contradict myself in the next meeting.) "If I say it three times, it's important." The problem is that every "initiative" he dreams up, no matter how unfeasible, is the most important iniative in the company, and only lasts for 3-6 months before he disbands it and has a new "most important initiative". He completely changes direction of his ship so frequently there is no time to gain any momentum or show success in any direction. As a result of this, and the constant firings with each change in direction, the morale is terrible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire a competent president. Fire an incompetent (and overpaid... > $1m/yr.) CEO.

    Pros

location, work week, holidays, free coffee

    Cons

There is no movement in Customer Service unless management decides to swap e'ees and then you do not get a choice to accept or decline. If more than one person requests leave at the same time, the second request is not approved regardless of reason - this is Customer Service policy. No objective measurements for performance reviews. Best you can hope for is 3 out of 5. No guidance or support to obtain better than avg review.

I worked at American Type Culture Collection full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

I loved my co-workers. They were some of the most friendly co-workers I have ever had. Also, the hours and flexibility of schedule was nice.

    Cons

The salaries are low for the area because they have the monopoly on the biotech business in the northern Virginia area. Also, you feel like you are constantly being watched. I do not appreciate being micromanaged being a salaried employee. As long as you produce excellent work in a timely manner, it should not matter that you take an extra ten minutes at lunch.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more money on your valuable employees.

    - Company has potential but as time goes by they are missing the boat.
    - As long as you're not in management, good life work balance.

    Cons

    - Uncle C is in charge and won't do the necessary things to grow the company.
    - High turnover especially with talented employees
    - No innovation which will eventually doom the company.

    Pros

Get tons of Federal funds, most of employees are nice, good universal medical coverage plan

    Cons

Strong polilitian culture. Extremely poor management for instance almost every apps full time developer left ATCC within 4months and they cannot find right person to replace so far. Salary is lower than average job market level

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go find younger CEO and give him full support so he may save the company's future, do not make him become a Yes boy to to follow current CEO's will
