I worked at American Water (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, good starting salary plus comparable industry raises, if you work for the right department/manager

    Cons

Too many managers, not enough Indians. Management is afraid of diversity among the ranks.

    Advice to Management

Wise up. You have lost a lot of good talent with many years of service. They left because of mgmt's Willy-nilly ways or because they got no where over the chosen few. Pay attention to your employees, your end-users!

I worked at American Water (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people (non-management) make it worthwhile to work at American Water - energetic, supportive, and innovative. The dedication to providing clean, safe water to the customers is clear in everything they do and they take great pride in serving the community.

    Cons

Executive and middle management is increasingly unaware or uninterested in the employees who make the business possible, preferring to shift their focus toward leadership and profit. They are constantly changing the organizational structure to fit flavor-of-the-month business models and are oblivious to the instability and dissatisfaction this causes with what was once a workforce with an average tenure of 17 years. That average has declined rapidly over the last few years which illustrates the trajectory of this company quite clearly.

    Advice to Management

Shift your focus back to the people in the field, behind the desks, and in customer service. Your bottom line is dependent on saving a once-thriving business culture and re-engaging your workforce.

I worked at American Water (Less than a year)

    Pros

None what so ever. HR dept was a joke. Manager had upper management snowed. I'm glade I don't get my water from these clowns.

    Cons

The worst IT shop I had ever worked in. The "manager" was a bully, a pathological liar and had cultural issues when it came to dealing with his direct reports.

    Advice to Management

Don't hire foreigners for management positions.
