I have been working at American Water full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Used be be a good company years ago

    Cons

Horrible management, long hours, dis-respect for employees and management is a big click full of a lot of lies These managers in finance are brutal. From Accounts Payable , Cash and Accounting, just unethical practices. They have ruined this company and are forcing out the pension people. Upper management, CEO, CFO should get awakened, but they wont. Corporate greed set in. I am looking to leave, it is such a farce,

I have been working at American Water full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Competitive salaries, most employees are sincere (excluding management).

    Cons

Where to start.. Abysmal training for new employees. Not a good place to start a career unless you want to be in the utility business until death. Work is done extremely inefficiently with suggestions thrown under the rug. Unrealistic work expectations. Was working all hours of the day and night and had impossible tasks with impossible deadlines.

Management always shifting. In the brief time that i have worked at American Water I have had 4 different managers. None of the managers know how to manage employees, nor do they have the necessary knowledge to run the business.
Many people are leaving as renewed promises to invigorate employees are failing. No motivation to work hard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

American water is in big trouble considering the fact that most people are nearing retiring age and they cannot retain young talent.

Change the work environment, take employee suggestions to heart, invest in vigorous training for new employees. Anyone with real promise is going to recognize this is a sinking ship and will be running.

I have been working at American Water full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The Health benefits are fairly decent. Overtime is available if you are into that .

    Cons

You are required to agree to work mandated overtime to work there. From that point forget about have two days off a week. You might get one. Lunches use to be a half hour, now they are an hour - MAYBE - if your not required to work half of it as mandatory overtime. Forget about getting off on time - they can hold you up to an hour to. The job is extremely stressful. The new SAP software we're forced to use is pathetic. Managers are nothing but yes-men.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make the mandatory overtime program more fair - or get rid of mandated overtime PERIOD. It is the major cause of low morale and turnover in the Illinois and Florida call centers.

I worked at American Water full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Nothing segregates them from any other company with benefits, salaries

    Cons

No work life balance. If you are salaried, you are expected to give many many extra hours while hourly employees get paid. Unfair performance reviews. You have to be in the "IN CROWD" to get promoted. Just smile and be a "GOOD LITTLE SOLDIER" and you can keep your job and not be harassed by management. Never speak up because management thinks they are" god" here and if you even think about calling out any unfair action out by managers, HR will stomp you and hide it. Reorganization was done unprofessionally and without compassion.
Favorites were chosen, company did not do what they said about keeping skilled people. It was more like keeping people around you who turn their heads and look the other way when management is unfair.
Too top heavy on managment. Especially in corporate. These people might have to really work now due to the reorg, no one left to pass their work off to.
Do yourself a favor and find another company. Even if they promise good money, it is never worth it, you will pay dearly.

There are no company values, no customer service left......all went bye bye so managment can cut jobs and make big bucks.

Wake up, what goes around comes around. Stop preying on innocent people's lives. We are not your puppets.

    Pros

They have pretty good benefits and if you are into brown nosing and cloaking the truth, you will go far.

    Cons

Too many political games. They hire their unqualified friends who know very little and others with talent get laid off. They hire too many temporary contract people for call center who don't get enough time to really learn their systems so that they can adequately care for customers on the national platform. By the time they begin to learn it, those people cycle out and a new group comes

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop hiring friends and be more transparent

great union people to work with

    Cons

management cant follow its own rules

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

practice what you preach (ethics rules)tell your managers that there is no need to lie to make a person look worse then they are. that person i am speaking of works at the treatment plants in nj. this person even tells under management to bend the truth to get his way with union people he wants to retaliate against .

I have been working at American Water

    Pros

You'll get to be dragged through the hiring process and dumped

    Cons

If you've raised 6 kids pretty much on your own so you have gaps in your employment, were left penniless by not one but two husbands so you have bad credit, have not had health insurance so couldn't treat your chronic illness and pass the physical and despite not having gone to college, spent 5 years doing college level work successfully at a major corporation do not apply here because you're still not good enough to work for this company.
