    Horrible management, long hours, dis-respect for employees and management is a big click full of a lot of lies These managers in finance are brutal. From Accounts Payable , Cash and Accounting, just unethical practices. They have ruined this company and are forcing out the pension people. Upper management, CEO, CFO should get awakened, but they wont. Corporate greed set in. I am looking to leave, it is such a farce,

    Pros

    Competitive salaries, most employees are sincere (excluding management).

    Cons

    Where to start.. Abysmal training for new employees. Not a good place to start a career unless you want to be in the utility business until death. Work is done extremely inefficiently with suggestions thrown under the rug. Unrealistic work expectations. Was working all hours of the day and night and had impossible tasks with impossible deadlines.

    Management always shifting. In the brief time that i have worked at American Water I have had 4 different managers. None of the managers know how to manage employees, nor do they have the necessary knowledge to run the business.
    Many people are leaving as renewed promises to invigorate employees are failing. No motivation to work hard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    American water is in big trouble considering the fact that most people are nearing retiring age and they cannot retain young talent.

    Change the work environment, take employee suggestions to heart, invest in vigorous training for new employees. Anyone with real promise is going to recognize this is a sinking ship and will be running.

    Pros

    The benefits are fair. It is a good place for someone looking gain experience in the water industry.

    Cons

    Work-life balance is terrible. The company is solely focused on inflating the stock price and dividend growth. They are reducing head counts and budgets. The remaining employees are left to pick up the slack and work harder. The company discourages overtime unless you're a salaried employee. Then they don't care how late you have to work as long as your work is completed.
    It is becoming very difficult to meet our financial goals because they are constantly changing. It is hard to hit a moving target. Our bonuses and increases are shrinking, while the executive team reaps enormous rewards in salary, bonuses, and stock options.
    The culture in Indiana is very bad. The feeling of job security does not exist. The vice-president has exhibited clear nepotism in his hiring practices. He uses intimidation as his management style.
    The leadership constantly talks about safety but they commit no resources towards it.
    There are many behavior/ethics/conduct/human resources policies in place but the company routinely disregards their own written policies.

    The recent culture survey was a very weak method to gauge employee attitudes. If you really are concerned, then create an anonymous way for employees to share their thoughts. The majority will not share their concerns because they feel like their jobs will be in jeopardy.
    Recruit more qualified managers.

    Pros

    The Health benefits are fairly decent. Overtime is available if you are into that .

    Cons

    You are required to agree to work mandated overtime to work there. From that point forget about have two days off a week. You might get one. Lunches use to be a half hour, now they are an hour - MAYBE - if your not required to work half of it as mandatory overtime. Forget about getting off on time - they can hold you up to an hour to. The job is extremely stressful. The new SAP software we're forced to use is pathetic. Managers are nothing but yes-men.

    Make the mandatory overtime program more fair - or get rid of mandated overtime PERIOD. It is the major cause of low morale and turnover in the Illinois and Florida call centers.

    Pros

    My manager is great. He puts up with a lot of junk from lower level employees and still has their best interest at heart. The salary is pretty good, the benefits are excellent and so is the PTO.

    Cons

    The employees are ungrateful for what they are given. If they would go and work at a less stable company, with less pay and sub par benefits, maybe they would appreciate their jobs instead of complaining all the time.

    Pros

    Salary and benefits - excellent. Provided substantial on the job training plus tuition aid program. Teamwork culture, especially during emergencies. Customer focus. Positive culture with company values which reinforced honesty & integrity. Overall a great place to work.

    Cons

    Work life balance difficult - on call 24/7. SAP implementation very difficult and interfered with front line supervision ability to get the job done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Business systems make job more difficult instead of more efficient, especially for front line supervisors who need to be out in the field with customers & employees.
