Pros
The culture at Amgen is very friendly and welcoming, especially to interns. Most everyone greeted me in passing or around the office. Interns are treated very well with trips and events. I learned a lot about how corporate finance operates and also how Amgen as a business works. It was a great leaning experience.
Cons
Some of the financial systems used were cumbersome or inefficient. There a lot of channels/approvals to go through if you want to implement a change to a current system.
Advice to Senior Management
Amgen treats interns well but the feeling I got from employees was that the "fun days" of Amgen had passed for the most part. Upper-management should try and change that.
Pros
good work life balance, the benefits were good but dwindling. its good to work for a company that has the ability to make a differance in peoples lives.
Cons
lack of focus , weak pipeline, sales driven not strategic, too much "fat" within the staff, poor budget management, no oversight of sr management
Pros
Great benefits and flexibility. Freedom to take initiative.
Cons
Promotion from internal is lacking. Keep hiring from other big pharma, which causes bureaucratic nightmare.
Advice to Senior Management
Cut the red tape.
Pros
The benefits: 401K, good health benefits, nice gym, cafeterias, daycare.
Cons
The lower level management gets formerly trained, but not effective in practice.
Advice to Senior Management
Need better qualifications for management
Pros
time off is plenty
benefits are excellent
Cons
no growth opportunities
senior management is poor
Pros
very good benefits, educated people, work life balance, on-site gym, diverse workforce
Cons
no one really knows what's going on, lots of cutting in R&D department, lots of company politics to get to where you want to go
Advice to Senior Management
cut middle management
Pros
Great company. Show your the best for this industry. Very considerated employer. Nice working environment. Very well salaries and beniefits.
Cons
Glass roof for international employees. Hard to get promoted. Kinda of boring work in the lab. Not very socialable and esay to commute.
Advice to Senior Management
Give more opportunities to international employees. Think about the great oversea market more. Anyway, a great job already and can be even better!
Pros
Great work conditions; they give themselves the means of their ambitions. Enjoyed working with high skilled, brilliant people on ambitious projects. Best-in-class standards and ethics. Excellent pay and benefits.
Cons
A lot of unecessary office politics. Leadership more command-and-control than collaborative. Despite being an innovative industry, the many compliance issues and linear processes tend to stiffle innovative initiatives, pity.
Advice to Senior Management
Empower your people and you will make a difference.
Pros
technical super stars around this companies, you would learn a lot more from other companies
Cons
do not enter without PhD degree. the company awards degree more than your capabilities
Advice to Senior Management
do not simply treat non-phDs are labors
Pros
Leaders in implementing new technologies and business strategies. Benefits are very good and they offer a lot of employee programs to support health and family. (Unfortunately, everyone is so over worked they can't benefit from these programs, but at least the company is making them available.)
Cons
More time is spent on corporate spin than on actually developing and manufacturing drugs. The politics have overwhelmed the work that is being done. Every bit of data is massaged and presented in presentations and more time is actually spent on colors and charts than on the actual data that went into the reports. So much time is spent "talking" about the data, the message behind the data is actually missing.
Advice to Senior Management
It's not ALL about the shareholders. Put more focus on development and manufacturing. Elevate those within the company and be open to contrary opinions. Appreciate that dissonance creates value. Bring back Gordon Binder as a consultant to assist with identifying new opportunities that can grow Amgen beyond financial positioning.
