Pros
great benefits package, pleasant and huge campus, methodical training, excellent stock options, great diversity, good family environment, excellent on-site facilities like laundry, gym, cafeterias
Cons
Disconnect between management and their reports, no scope for individual growth, poor career development, middle management heavy, too much politics.
Advice to Senior Management
Invest more in employee career development, allow lateral movement and cross department training opportunities, pay serious attention to employee feedback of their managers, hire more employees than middle managers.
Pros
still good benefits, great campus to work at.
Cons
New motto, do more with less.
Advice to Senior Management
stop over-compensating yourselves when the company is hurting. listen to staff complaints via surveys.
Pros
Intelligent people, great work life balance, and entrepreneurial spirit drives the organization. Between shutdown and the University relations team, they empbasize high involvement of interns.
Cons
Excessive concensus building seems to get in the way of productivity and efficiency. Management quality varies by business unit. Without open internship benchmarks, it can feel like an extended 3 month interview instead of getting a feel for how it
Advice to Senior Management
Ensure managers have the scope and time to commit to developing their MBA interns. Some projects and expectations weren't as well defined as others.
Pros
The innovative science and the dedication of the whole organization to patients. I really appreciated the high quality of staff. I felt that most people I worked with were highly professional, smart and good natured. I especially appreciated the opportunity to do meaningful work because of the serious diseases that Amgen treats. The future has many exciting prospects for growth. Compensation and benefits are still some of the best in Southern CA.
Cons
The executive leadership was out of touch with staff and manages with an old command and control style. There is still a 'boy's club' atmosphere in the C suite. Also the best leaders (Dennis Fenton and George Morrow) have left the company.
Advice to Senior Management
Treat staff with more respect, listen to what they have to say. Promote a few more of the brilliant women you have there.
Pros
The management is great in helping balance the work-life situations. Its not really difficult to ask to be able to come in a little earlier so that you can get of and go to medical appointment.
Cons
So far, the interview process takes time and they are very rigorous about the constant training sessions one must complete.
Pros
Work-life benefits, compensation package, encourages mobility between Amgen sites, competitive environment, highly skilled workforce, staff hold true to Amgen Values
Cons
lack of decision makers in upper management, weak pipeline, you now have to interview for any promotional movement (no longer based on merit or achievement), low employees moral and lack of excitement...
Advice to Senior Management
Be better fighters for your team; advance staff who are exceeding expectations, remember how fun it was to come to work 15 years ago...that is totally lost in Amgen's new reality. Something BIG needs to change to restore employee satisfaction.
Pros
1) Highly talented people
2) Great location and weather
3) Good benefits
4) Environment conducive for doing great science
Cons
1) Several layers of management
2) Folks who do science are not so well recognized anymore. Attention being paid to big talkers.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to pay more attention to science. Do not just focus on new policies/procedures all the time
Pros
They have a good benefits package and they allow very flexible work schedules. They also have good compensation for education.
Cons
Not as many opportunities and/or growth are available within the company.
Pros
Amgen is full of talented, intelligent people that are helpful and friendly. You have a tremendous amount of resources to do your job. In addition, the salary and benefits are very competitive within the industry.
Cons
There's a fair amount of bureaucracy and lots of time is spent trying to figure out who is the right person to talk to, just to get something done. And with everyone so talented and ambitious, it's tough to get promoted as growth opportunities are somewhat limited.
Pros
great mission, great people and great compensation package
Cons
generous in promotions but not in the compensation increases when being promotes
Advice to Senior Management
cut down on the huge bonuses at top and provie more to the lower level
