I have been working at Amgen full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Smart people with a great mission. Not too much internal politics, management is generally competent. Good quality work with excellent science behind it. Good compensation with great benefits. Fairly easy to strike good work/life balance.

    Cons

Sometimes feels like a large company with a lot of red tape. Can be frustrating to see shareholder value take priority over employees. Is leaving WA state. I'm sad to see them go and would liked to have stayed with Amgen until retirement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to include staff affected by decisions more in at least the information gathering activity, if not the actual decision making.

    Pros

Great information system, massive data base. You can find anything if you want to learn.

    Cons

Technical strong people don't get enough respect if they don't know how to play the politics or not favored by your director.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remove the middle layers and get to know your people well.

I have been working at Amgen full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good scientists within my dept. and across different collaborating groups

    Cons

The upper management is very weak in science, focuses too much on "messaging", and very unfair. It seems that they only care about climbing up the ladder themselves. The actual science and career development for the subordinates are largely ignored.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be fair and get to know supporting staff's true scientific strength. And be good human beings!!!

I have been working at Amgen full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Excellent pay and benefits and awards of Bonus and stocks every year.

    Cons

High stress environment where competition is overtly promoted and the company will lay-off/RIF staff to increase profit. Company actively moving production overseas to avoid taxes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop moving operations overseas and invest more in American operations and staff.

I worked at Amgen full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Holiday shut down 4th of July week and Christmas holiday.

    Cons

In the last year there have been five rounds of layoffs. They constantly bring in new fresh blood to only cut a year later. Everyone in town warns people of this. Often times, it's too late because you already took the job here. Too much outsourcing. They need to develop in house talent. Make a plan and stick with it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Only scale up if you have a long term plan that you are truly committed to.
