I have been working at Amgen full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great health benefits and excellent 401K matching (up to 10% of base salary).
People are friendly, intelligent, and easy to work with. Everyone is aligned on the mission of serving patients.

    Cons

Low morale currently (Oct'14) due to 15% headcount RIF, with 5% more to follow in 2015... and the volume of work isn't going away. Limited growth opportunity - a lot of talented mid-level to senior managers who have little opportunity to advance to the next level, and even less now with reduction in layers. Career progression is heavily dependent on who you know.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

While aiming to please shareholders and the investment community, don't lose sight of employees being your "greatest asset."

I have been working at Amgen

    Pros

Wages, 401k, vacation, sick leave if you can use it (although too many abuse it), used to have many company perks but not anymore

    Cons

One of the worst work environments I've experienced. People are immoral, lazy, inefficient. It's all about politics and cozying up to the right people. Good talkers get promoted, but they have nothing to show for it. Top-heavy with too many managers that do no real work but get paid the big bucks. People are afraid to speak out in fear of retaliation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The layoffs were meant to make the company more efficient but the good knowledgeable workers are leaving and the useless managers are being retained. Fix that.

    Pros

Pays well and great benefits. 401K and vacation are generous.

    Cons

Confusing place to work. Overly demanding on the competent folks, leaving the incompetent to do very little. Little to no opportunity for promotion, particularly when widely known, far-below-average staff are consistently promoted based on age, race and gender to fulfill quotas.

I worked at Amgen full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Good benefits
    - Well work-life balance
    - Flexible work schedule and location

    Cons

    - Value staff to be agreeable than to be right
    - Lack of transparency on promotion criteria
    - Encourage staff to cover one another on mediocre work or loopholes, and then sugarcoat them as achievement
    - Encourage creativity but lack of harness, so staff tend to work in their own way which is disconnected from business need

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some departments are ruled by autocrats biased with their own peculiar experiences, but pretend to be democrats with open-mind. These hypocrites are trying to build their own castles on a detour from general industry practice so that only themselves can lead the way for their own job security rather than for business continuity. Do not let these hypocrites fool you!

Promising pipeline being ruined by shortsighted financial interests

I worked at Amgen full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great people, campus. High-performing teams and expectations of excellence.

    Cons

Lip service to values that are not followed in practice e.g. work-life balance, ethical competitiion, success via merit. Management is extremely thin-skinned and brooks no 'disconfirming information' that goes counter to financial marching orders. Overly aggressive and unrealistic outsourcing is going to cause major pipeline delays and financial damage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Constant pressure to do more with less people and less-qualified people will backfire. Some of those selling the ideas for Amgen full potential are double agents for consulting firms. They will take their bonuses and return to their true masters before it all hits the fan.

I worked at Amgen full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The people who work there are great and the work is rewarding. The team environment is good and the teams were great to manage. The benefits are great and during the years I was there I had many opportunities to do different things and explore multiple roles. Up until early 2014 I would have rated the company 5 stars.

    Cons

The company is undergoing significant changes and it is a difficult time to be in R&D, as the budget cutting is significant, particularly on the earlier (research, pre-phase 2) programs. In the last year that I was at the company there was a significant amount of change and it is not clear when that will settle down. With the restructuring and layoffs in the last few months there is a lot of negative energy at the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Re-engage the staff and make sure the highly skilled employees who work there feel valued. Make sure to create some stability, as it is hard for employees to do their best when the sands under their feet are changing constantly.

I have been working at Amgen full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good Pay, Excellent Benefits, decent with work life balance. Diverse opportunities if know how to seek them out. Smart co-workers

    Cons

Constant layoffs and re-orgs, leadership initiatives change at a whim, strategy can never be implemented long enough to see an impact. Key functions are outsourced leading to extended lead times to get the work done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pick a plan and stick to it. Spin off your early research group. Give them the space to be truly innovative. They suffer by being viewed not as an asset but as a financial sink hole.

Changing business model, limited communication, and growth of policitics

I worked at Amgen full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The past year AMGEN has been going through much change which has been a great resume booster for personal growth.

    Cons

Salary re-leveling, politics, and uncertainty of future due to biotech shakeup and internal business model change. Limited communication causes a chaotic environment with individuals blaming others. Very sad to see a "every man for themselves" type of environment versus fostering a great opportunity to network with peers internally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communication is key through change. Remove the politicians.
