    Pros

Benefits, pay, culture, professionalism. Some of the best time off of any company in the biotechnology industry.

    Cons

Unstable environment at the present. Probability of moving most manufacturing operations overseas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The bottom line is not the only thing that makes a company great. People are the lifeblood.

I have been working at Amgen full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good health insurance, good 401k, good vacation, flex hours or work from home options.

    Cons

Like most places, health care premiums continue to rise; rumors that 401k benefits will be cut; frequent lay-offs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop laying people off to boost the bottom line, but then hiring other people back over the course of a couple years! Keep the experienced, dedicated folks you have!

Great place to work at the start, with diminishing returns as company grew larger

Current Employee - Senior Manager, Medical Affairs Function in Thousand Oaks, CA

I have been working at Amgen full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Amgen is a high science biotechnology company with outstanding marketed products and a robust pipeline.

    Cons

As all companies grow larger, there are challenges with bureaucracy and decision-making processes. The optics of all decisions are viewed through too many lenses. It appears that stock price became more important than talent retention. The current restructuring has resulted in the exodus of great talent and expertise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It may be wise to hedge your future success on talent and expertise rather than restructuring and reducing the work-force in an effort to increase stock price

I have been working at Amgen full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Amazing place to learn business
    - Outstanding values and culture
    - Good opportunities and encouraging management
    - Excellent Benefits and work-life balance

    Cons

Change is in the air and management doesn't hold much control over it. Stagnancy can seep in real soon if individual doesn't take charge of his/her own career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Have a defined plan and share with the employees.
    - More communication needed to keep boosting morale

Good experience, but very politically charged environment

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    I worked at Amgen

    Pros

If you were in siloed business units, you had a great experience because the team was focused on doing well.

    Cons

There was a very politically charged environment, much more political than I had expected. The company is also going through a restructuring process which is difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promotions and perks should be done more tactfully.

    Pros

Stimulating environment. Many technical challenges with the resources and authority to solve them. Line management is supportive and encouraging.

    Cons

Not the most nimble company, and the IS infrastructure is difficult to work with. Many competing priorities often present resource challenges that are not accounted for in deliverable timelines.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    None.

Workplace culture slowly eroding as business focus supercedes science

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at Amgen

    Pros

Work-life balance, benefits, colleagues. Stock has done tremendously over past 3 years. Great gym.

    Cons

Loss of perks, loss of talent, layoffs. Too much process. SOPs on wiping your tush. Decisions are made by few, fear of getting it wrong. Risk aversion, both in Go and No Go decisions. Leaders not the best and brightest but have vanilla leadership traits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more incentives to get people excited for the day-to-day work. Make folks proud to bring their kids into the workplace - somber mood needs to be rejiggered to motivate. Set clear science focused vision. Leaders need to lead.
