    Cons

Managment has lost culture. Depending on the department, a general observation is that Amgen does not promote internally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Amgen as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Salaries are top notch and the company is on cutting edge of Biotech companies.

    Cons

Position was a contract position and unfortunately the company was in the middle of hiring freeze at the time my contract ended.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider extending contract terms for the contract employees who the company knows it would like to hire on as a permanent worker during a hiring freeze so as to eliminate all the red tape regarding that candidate's availability to hire following the end of their original contracted term.

I have been working at Amgen full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The current benefits are great, but don't expect it to last.
Full pipeline and lots of challenging problems to solve.
Work life balance is what you make it.

    Cons

The current executive staff are destroying the company. Morale is incredibly low. There is little contingency planning for the massive reorganization that is in process, and most current employees do not view the changes as being for the better.
Last year there were no raises for mid career folks and above. This is likely to continue into next year. Salaries are considered overinflated. So, there have been slow cuts to benefits that are likely to continue. Great folks have worked for over 10 years with no hope of a promotion in sight. This leads to entire departmental groups of people skilled enough for promotion. So many in a pool like that leads to backstabbing and cut corners.
Overspending on poor decisions and corporate perks continues unhindered despite cuts to staff.
Additionally, there are so many administrative layers that one spends more time on administrative stuff than real science.
Most who are smart are making plans to move on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We used to value good science, patient safety, our community, and each other in addition to return for stockholders. Unless you return to these values, Amgen will not survive.

    Pros

    Great benefits
    Reasonable salary
    Strong product pipeline
    Solid reputation
    Good work/life balance
    Relatively stable place to work

    Cons

Lack of transparency even though it is claimed otherwise
    Few career opportunities
A plethora of box checking and hoop jumping in order to advance
    Data issues are pervasive
    Management does not listen
Trades on past biotech reputation while current culture 100% big pharma

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more transparent with the employees
Go back to the former culture where patients mattered, not just the bottom line
Make employees feel like they matter

    Pros

Pay and benefits are excellent. The campus is beautiful

    Cons

Constant organizational changes makes it difficult to keep staff motivated as this always seems to include a RIF

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your employees are what makes the organization what it is today...the attitude is not what it use to be and the company values seem to be floundering.

I have been working at Amgen full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I can only speak from my experience in Clinical Development - Good overall compensation package and excellent staff (which includes the contractors). This in turn attracts more brilliant scientists to join. People take their jobs seriously and are enthusiastic in what they do.

    Cons

New work process and more new work process. Constant changes and endless roll out of new work processes.
Management sees offshoring the way to become cost effective. It is positively unamarican.
The recent restructure in the name of centralization essentially rolls the company back what they started just a few years ago.
It pays to be manager's favorites

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Good luck on your new corporate strategy.
